Give São Paulo 3 nights: base near Avenida Paulista, do one Downtown half-day and one food or art night. Skip it only if you want beaches.

São Paulo is Brazil's largest city and its food, art and nightlife capital — 12.1 million people in the city, about 21.3 million in the metro area, and the biggest Japanese, Italian and Arab communities outside their home countries. It is not a beach or a postcard city: the payoff is restaurants, museums, street art and clubs, spread across districts that each feel like a different town. Most travellers give it 2–3 nights between Rio and Iguaçu, or as a flight hub.

About 40 km (25 mi) from the centre; airport shuttle buses to Paulista, República, Tietê and Barra Funda, or the Airport Express train to Luz.

About 15 km (9.3 mi) from downtown; domestic mostly, including the São Paulo–Rio shuttle. Bus along Avenida Paulista, or metro to São Judas then bus.

Get around

The metro is fast, cheap and the only reliable way through traffic; buy a Bilhete Único card and top it up. Buses cover what the metro misses but are slow at peak. Use ride-hailing apps for nights and cross-town hops; taxis are metered but pricier. Traffic can turn a 6 km (3.7 mi) ride into an hour — check before committing to a taxi to the airport.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
  • Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
  • Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
  • Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
  • Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended

Scams and watch-outs

  • Street crime is opportunistic: phone snatching on Avenida Paulista, in República and on crowded buses. Keep the phone in a pocket, not in your hand.
  • Do not walk the Downtown streets (República, Sé, Luz, Santa Ifigênia) after dark; take a taxi or ride-hailing car door to door.
  • Summer downpours (Dec–Feb) flood underpasses and the Tietê and Pinheiros margins; avoid driving through standing water.
  • Card cloning and ATM skimming happen: use bank ATMs inside malls or branches, and cover the keypad.
  • If you are robbed, hand over the phone or cash — do not resist.

São Paulo is safer than its reputation for the areas you will actually use, but it is a big city with real street crime: keep the phone out of sight, use ride-hailing at night, and avoid the Downtown streets on foot after dark.
