Before you start
Welcome to the Civic centre (Praça and cathedral) audio walk in São Tomé. 3 stops: São Tomé Cathedral (Sé), Palace square (Praça) and Roça Monte Café (coffee estate). Cathedral, palace square and the streets around them: a short flat morning walk, shade on the square.
The square, the cathedral and the streets to the waterfront road. Underfoot: cracked paving; slope: flat; shade: medium.
São Tomé is a small port capital that grew from a colonial anchorage into the seat of a country of about 200,000 people. The fort, the cathedral and the bay road are short walks apart, and each one records a different layer: sugar, cocoa, the independence struggle and the quiet, cash-only present.
Before you start: Cover shoulders and knees in the cathedral. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. São Tomé Cathedral (Sé)
Sé Catedral
Look for
- The nave
- The forecourt and towers
- Side chapels
- Front elevation from the square
- Towers from the palace square side
Stop 1 of 3: São Tomé Cathedral (Sé). Locally, Sé Catedral. Arrival point: On the main square.
Go in the morning, outside Mass: fifteen to twenty minutes on the square with shoulders and knees covered. On a first visit: A landmark and a quiet fifteen minutes.
Look for The nave: Cool, quiet and mostly white, with side altars. Look for The forecourt and towers: The best view of the twin towers and the square. Look for Side chapels: Small altars and statues; be quiet. For a photo: Front elevation from the square, 07:30–09:00, sun behind you. For a photo: Towers from the palace square side, late afternoon.
Cover shoulders and knees; no photos during services. Quiet except at Mass times. Shoulders and knees covered; no hats inside. Free to enter; a donation box may be at the door (coins). Church services follow the parish timetable: Sunday mornings are busy. The white front and towers are the best photo from across the square.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Palace square (Praça). It's about 3 minutes on foot, about 350 metres to the east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Palace square (Praça)
Praça do Palácio
Look for
- Shaded benches and paths
- View of the palace
- Evening promenade
- Trees and paths on the square
- Cathedral from across the square
Stop 2 of 3: Palace square (Praça). Locally, Praça do Palácio. Arrival point: On the square by the palace.
Look and walk through: shade, benches and the seat of government from a respectful distance; do not photograph the palace or its guards. On a first visit: A ten-minute stop to get your bearings.
Look for Shaded benches and paths: Sit for a few minutes. Look for View of the palace: From across the square; no photos. Look for Evening promenade: Locals stroll after 17:00. For a photo: Trees and paths on the square, 07:30–09:00. For a photo: Cathedral from across the square, late afternoon.
Do not photograph the presidential palace or guards. Empty by day, busier in the evening. No photographs of the palace, guards, police or soldiers; the square and trees are fine. Do not photograph the palace, guards, police or soldiers. The square is at its best in the shade before 10:00 and after 16:30.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Roça Monte Café (coffee estate). It is about 12.2 km to the south-west: too far to walk, so plan a ride and check your map. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Roça Monte Café (coffee estate)
Roça Monte Café
Look for
- Estate buildings and drying terraces
- Small museum
- Coffee tasting
- Hill views
Stop 3 of 3: Roça Monte Café (coffee estate). Locally, Roça Monte Café.
The best half-day out of town: a former coffee estate in the cool hills with a small museum and coffee; go in the morning by hired car and confirm the visit terms first.
Look for Estate buildings and drying terraces: Colonial-era factory and terraces (check what is open). Look for Small museum: Photos and objects about the coffee story (confirm). Look for Coffee tasting: Island coffee served fresh (confirm). Look for Hill views: Cool air and forest edge.
Roça Monte Café, in the hills above the town, is a former coffee estate open for visits (confirm the current terms), and it shows the scale of the old system in a single set of buildings.
Do not go without a driver and a return time. Quiet on weekdays; groups at midday on tour days. Fine outdoors; ask before photographing workers and the drying floors.
