Shangqiu is a historic hub in eastern Henan with a 4,000‑year past, a compact ancient city centre, and good rail links. It works as a short stop for culture‑focused travellers; most attractions fit in a half‑day, so a single night is enough unless you chase specialty food or countryside parks.

Language
Mandarin is the language of the whole country, written in Simplified characters; Cantonese dominates Guangdong and Hong Kong, and dozens of regional languages survive at home. English is on metro signs, airports and large hotels; elsewhere use a translation app. Pinyin (the romanisation) helps with names but tones change meaning.
