Before you start
Welcome to the Old Bazaar & Kale Fortress audio walk in Skopje. 3 stops: Kale Fortress, Mustafa Pasha Mosque and Daut Pasha Hamam (National Gallery). Morning and dusk cluster: the fortress walls before 11:00, the bazaar lanes and a kebapi lunch, then a coffee stop; cobbles and little shade at noon.
Kale Fortress in the north, the lanes of the Old Bazaar, Daut Pasha Hamam and the caravanserais in the south. Underfoot: cobbles; slope: gentle; shade: medium.
Skopje is a city that was built, burned, rebuilt and rebuilt again.
Before you start: Mosques: dress modestly and take shoes off. Fortress walls have uneven stone and open edges; watch children. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Kale Fortress
Скопско Кале
Look for
- Lower gate and approach lane
- Wall walk
- Inner court and excavation area
- Lookout towards Vodno
Stop 1 of 3: Kale Fortress. Arrival point: Walk up from the Old Bazaar; taxis stop at the foot of the hill.
The old fortress above the bazaar: a short outdoor climb and wall walk, best before 11:00 or after 17:00; little shade and free entry. On a first visit: A free, quick way to read the city's layout.
Look for Lower gate and approach lane: A short uphill lane from the bazaar with a few steps. Look for Wall walk: Sections of the stone walls with views over the river and the rooftops; uneven and exposed. Look for Inner court and excavation area: Open ground where digs and events happen; parts may be fenced (check). Look for Lookout towards Vodno: The best view of the basin and the mountain on a clear day.
Wall edges are open; watch children and stay off unmarked drops. Quiet in the morning; groups at dusk. Allowed everywhere.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Mustafa Pasha Mosque. It's about 6 minutes on foot, about 100 metres to the east. Route: Walk to Mustafa Pasha Mosque. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Mustafa Pasha Mosque
Мустафа-пашина џамија
Look for
- Courtyard and fountain
- Prayer hall
- Minaret and exterior
Stop 2 of 3: Mustafa Pasha Mosque. Arrival point: Walk from Kale or the bazaar; the mosque is at the foot of the fortress hill.
A 15th-century mosque with a shaded courtyard beneath the fortress: a 20-minute quiet stop with modest dress, outside prayer times.
Look for Courtyard and fountain: A shaded space with trees and a small fountain. Look for Prayer hall: A domed hall with carpets and simple decoration; enter quietly, shoes off. Look for Minaret and exterior: Best seen from the courtyard; the minaret is not open to visitors.
The mosques, such as the Mustafa Pasha Mosque of 1492, gave the quarter its religious and social centre, with fountains, shaded courtyards and a prayer hall under a dome. Walk up to Kale early, come down through the lanes to the Mustafa Pasha Mosque, look inside the Daut Pasha Hamam, then eat kebapi at a busy grill before the lunch rush ends. When was it built? 1492, in the Ottoman period.
Cover shoulders and knees, take shoes off, and women carry a scarf. Quiet outside prayer times; busy around Friday midday prayer. Ask; never during prayer.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Daut Pasha Hamam (National Gallery). It's about 4 minutes on foot, about 150 metres to the south-east. Route: Walk to Daut Pasha Hamam. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Daut Pasha Hamam (National Gallery)
Даут-пашин амам
Look for
- Entrance hall and dome
- Exhibition rooms
- Marble courtyard
- The domes from the square
Stop 3 of 3: Daut Pasha Hamam (National Gallery). Arrival point: Walk from the bazaar's main lane; the hamam is beside the Old Bazaar square.
A 15th-century Ottoman bath used as an art gallery: cool domed rooms for 30–45 minutes, a good heat stop in the bazaar.
Look for Entrance hall and dome: The vaulted hall with the original bath structure. Look for Exhibition rooms: Paintings and sculpture from the National Gallery collection (check current shows). Look for Marble courtyard: A small open space beside the hamam. For a photo: The domes from the square, late morning.
The hamams, or baths, such as the Daut Pasha Hamam of the late fifteenth century, were places for washing and for meeting, and the one in Skopje now serves as an art gallery with domed rooms and a marble floor.
Do not touch the works; ask before photographing. Quiet on weekdays; busier at weekends. Ask at the desk; some exhibitions ban flash.
