The honest verdict
Skopje is compact but split in two by the Vardar river: the Ottoman Old Bazaar on the north bank, the rebuilt Macedonia Square and its statues on the south. The trips that go wrong walk the bazaar at 14:00 in July, arrive late without a booked transfer, or plan an outdoor week in a smoggy January. Four clusters cover a first visit: the Old Bazaar, Macedonia Square and the Stone Bridge, the Debar Maalo restaurant quarter, and Bit Pazar market. Ohrid is a separate base, not a day trip.

Etiquette: the top three

- Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off, women carry a scarf; do not enter during prayer times and ask before photographing worshippers.
- Greetings
- A handshake and a hello (zdravo) is enough; in the bazaar, greeting the shopkeeper before you ask a price goes a long way.
- Names and politics
- Avoid debating the country's name, language or borders with locals; it is sensitive, and Skopje 2014 statues are argued about.
