Slovenia
Slovenia itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks
For 7 days, do Ljubljana 2 nights, Bled 2, Bohinj 1, Piran 2, with Postojna or Škocjan caves on the drive south. A hire car makes this loop far easier than buses. Without a car, cut Bohinj and use the Ljubljana–Bled–Piran rail and bus links.

Summary table by length, month and cost

- Book Bled and Piran accommodation early for July and August; both are small.
- Cave tours at Postojna and Škocjan run on fixed slots, so book the day before in summer.

The itineraries step by step
Seven days, Alps, caves and coast. Two nights in Ljubljana gives you the old town, the castle and the market without rushing. Move to Bled for two nights: the island, the castle and Vintgar Gorge, with an early walk to Ojstrica or Mala Osojnica for the view before the coaches arrive. One night at Bohinj is enough for the quieter lake and a short Alpine walk. Then drive south and stop at Postojna or Škocjan on the way to Piran, where two nights covers the Venetian lanes, the seafront and a swim. If you have no car, run Ljubljana 3 nights, Bled 2 and Piran 2 and use buses and trains between them.
Ten days, the full Slovene loop. Add two nights in the Soča valley at Bovec or Kobarid, reached over the Vršič pass when it is open, roughly May to October; outside that window use the Bohinj car train. Kobarid has the First World War museum and the river walks. One night in Goriška Brda for the wine hills, then the Karst caves and two nights in Piran. Finish with a night in Ljubljana before flying out.
Two weeks, Slovenia and its neighbours. Stretch Ljubljana to three nights, keep Bled two, Bohinj one, Soča two and Piran three, then head northeast for two nights in Maribor and one in Ptuj. Maribor has trains to Graz and Vienna, so you can end the trip abroad rather than doubling back. Three weeks lets you slow every stop by a day, add Kamnik and the Kamniško-Savinjske Alps north of Ljubljana, and spend longer on the coast around Koper and Piran.
| Stop | 7 days | 10 days | 14 days |
|---|---|---|---|

| Goriška Brda | — | 1 night | — |

| Piran | 2 nights | 2 nights | 3 nights |

Notes
Distances are short: Ljubljana to Bled is about 55 km, Bled to Piran about 160 km, and the whole country is smaller than many US states. That is why a week works, and also why it is easy to over-schedule. Two nights in one place beats four one-night stops.
Public transport is good on the main spine, Ljubljana to Bled, and to the coast at Koper and Piran, but thin in the Alps and the Soča valley. If you are relying on buses, build the trip around Ljubljana, Bled and Piran and treat Bohinj and the Soča as car trips or organised day tours.
Mountain roads and the Vršič pass can close for snow outside the warm months, and the caves keep steady temperatures year-round, which makes them a good wet-day swap. Summer weekends fill Bled and Piran; spring and September are calmer and cheaper.
- Check the Vršič pass status before routing over it.
- Keep one buffer day if you are driving the Alps in shoulder season.
- Book cave slots and Bled accommodation ahead in July and August.

Questions people ask
What is a good 7-day itinerary for Slovenia?
Ljubljana 2 nights, Bled 2, Bohinj 1, Piran 2, with Postojna or Škocjan caves on the drive south. A hire car makes it far easier. Without a car, do Ljubljana 3, Bled 2, Piran 2 by bus and train.
How many weeks should I spend in Slovenia?
One week covers Ljubljana, the Julian Alps and the coast. Ten days adds the Soča valley and Goriška Brda. Two weeks adds Maribor and Ptuj and lets you exit to Zagreb or Vienna. Three weeks lets you slow every stop.
What is the best route through Slovenia?
A loop: Ljubljana → Bled → Bohinj → Vršič → Soča valley → Goriška Brda → Karst caves → Piran → back to Ljubljana. It avoids doubling back and hits the Alps, the caves and the sea in one line.
Do I need a car in Slovenia?

Roughly May to October, depending on snow. Outside that window, cross between Bohinj and the Soča valley using the car train instead.
How much does a week in Slovenia cost?
