The honest verdict
Sofia's centre is small and mostly flat, and the sights are clustered around the yellow-brick streets between the Alexander Nevsky cathedral and Serdika. Trips go wrong on transport, not distance: unmarked taxis overcharge at the airport, signs are in Cyrillic, and Rila Monastery and Boyana Church are far enough to need a car or a tour. Four clusters cover a first visit; Rila and Plovdiv are trips away from one kept bed.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Unmarked taxis and drivers who approach you at the airport charge several times the normal fare: use the metro, a licensed taxi or an app.(Scams)

- Cover shoulders and knees; men remove hats; ask before photographing; no photos during services.
