Sofia is a flat, walkable capital: do the Alexander Nevsky cathedral and the Serdika ruins on foot in the morning, keep Vitosha Boulevard for the afternoon, and use the metro from the airport — the mountains are a day trip, not a walk.
Sofia's centre is small and mostly flat, and the sights are clustered around the yellow-brick streets between the Alexander Nevsky cathedral and Serdika. Trips go wrong on transport, not distance: unmarked taxis overcharge at the airport, signs are in Cyrillic, and Rila Monastery and Boyana Church are far enough to need a car or a tour. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Head gestures: In Bulgaria a nod can mean no and a side-to-side shake can mean yes; if in doubt, say the word.
- Greetings: A handshake and a short "dobar den" (good day) when you enter a small shop or café.
- Churches and the mosque: Cover shoulders and knees; men remove hats; ask before photographing; no photos during services.
- Photographing people: Ask before photographing sellers or worshippers up close.
- Tipping: Round up or add about 10% in restaurants; check whether a service charge is included.
- Tram tracks: Do not stand on the tracks; trams are quiet and fast.
Red lines
- Do not photograph inside churches unless the sign permits; do not point cameras at people praying.
- Do not cross tram tracks without looking both ways.
- Dress code applies in churches and the mosque.
Scams and watch-outs
- Unmarked taxis and drivers who approach you at the airport charge several times the normal fare: use the metro, a licensed taxi or an app.
- Currency exchange booths advertise 'no commission' but pay a poor rate: use an ATM or a bank.
- Bars near the centre that add a large hidden charge for drinks or 'hostess' companions: check the menu and the price before ordering.
