Best places to visit in South Africa: top cities, regions and sights
For a first trip, base 4–5 nights in Cape Town, then add either the Cape Winelands and Garden Route (4–5 nights, one-way drive) or fly to the Kruger area for 3–4 nights of safari. With two weeks, do both and fly between the Cape and Kruger. Skip the long inter-region drives.

Summary table by place, nights and month
Ranked for a first or second trip. Nights are a working minimum, not a maximum. Best months reflect both the Cape and the bush.
| Place | Why go | Nights | Best months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cape Town | Table Mountain, Peninsula, Robben Island, food and wine | 4–5 | Oct–Apr |
| Kruger National Park | Self-drive Big Five from rest camps or a private lodge | 3–4 | May–Oct |
| Cape Winelands (Stellenbosch, Franschhoek) | Wine estates, mountain scenery, 45 min from Cape Town | 1–2 | Oct–Apr |
| Garden Route | Coast, forest and lagoons on a one-way drive | 3–5 | Oct–Apr |
| Cape Peninsula | Chapman's Peak, Boulders penguins, Cape Point | 0 (day trip) | All year |
| Hermanus | Whales from the cliffs | 1–2 | Jun–Nov |
| Drakensberg | Hiking and San rock art | 2–3 | Apr–May, Sep–Oct |
| Johannesburg and Soweto | Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill | 1–2 | All year |
| Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and iSimangaliso | Rhinos, wetlands and the Indian Ocean | 2–3 | May–Oct |
| Addo Elephant Park | Malaria-free elephants near the end of the Garden Route | 1–2 | All year |
Best months are a rule of thumb; the Cape is a winter-rainfall region and the bush is a summer-rainfall one, so a single trip rarely hits both at their peak.
How to build the trip, step by step
Start with Cape Town. It is the easiest arrival, the densest cluster of things to do, and the base for the Western Cape. Four or five nights covers Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula day trip, Robben Island and a day in the Winelands. If the mountain is clear on your first morning, go up that day; cloud and wind close the cableway often.
Then choose one of two branches. Branch A is the coast: pick up a car in Cape Town and drive the Garden Route one way, 3–5 nights, ending at Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Add Addo Elephant Park for a malaria-free safari on the way. Branch B is the bush: fly to the Kruger area for 3–4 nights, self-driving between rest camps or staying at a private lodge.
With two weeks, do both. Fly between the Cape and the Kruger area rather than driving: the road distance is long and the flight is short. A common shape is Cape Town 4 nights, Winelands 1, Garden Route 3, Addo 1, Kruger 4, with one Johannesburg night at the end if your long-haul leaves early.
Add Johannesburg only if you want the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and a guided Soweto visit. It is a hub city, not a holiday city, and one or two nights is enough. Durban suits a second trip, as a gateway to the Drakensberg and Zululand, or a stop for Indian Ocean beaches and curry.
Drive only by day, and avoid arriving at a new town after dark. Distances on the map are deceptive: Cape Town to Knysna is a full day with stops, and the Garden Route rewards slow driving.
- 7 days: Cape Town 5, Stellenbosch 2
- 10 days: Cape Town 4, Knysna 2, Kruger 3, Johannesburg 1
- 14 days: Cape Town 4, Franschhoek 1, Knysna or Plettenberg Bay 3, Addo 1, Kruger 4
Notes before you book
Book the Robben Island ferry and the Table Mountain cableway online; both sell out in peak season and both are weather-dependent. Safari rest camps inside Kruger and popular Garden Route towns fill up months ahead for South African school holidays and the December–January peak.
Malaria risk is concentrated in the lowveld: the Kruger area and parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo. Addo, the Garden Route and the Cape are considered malaria-free. Check current advice for your specific itinerary before you travel.
Domestic flights between Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Gqeberha are frequent and cheap relative to the driving time they save. Renting a car one way between Cape Town and Gqeberha is normal; check the drop-off fee.
Crime is a real consideration in cities. Use a guided Soweto visit rather than a self-guided one, keep valuables out of sight, and take a licensed taxi or ride-hailing car after dark rather than walking.
- Book Robben Island, the cableway and safari camps early
- Check malaria advice for the lowveld
- Compare one-way car hire fees
- Do not plan long drives after dark

Questions people ask
What are the best places to visit in South Africa?
Cape Town first, with the Cape Peninsula and the Winelands. Then either the Garden Route one way to Gqeberha and Addo, or the Kruger area for a safari. Johannesburg for the Apartheid Museum and Soweto, the Drakensberg for hiking, and Hermanus for whales in season.
How many days do you need in South Africa?
Seven days covers Cape Town and the Winelands. Ten days adds the Garden Route or a Kruger safari. Two weeks lets you do the Cape, the coast and the bush, flying between the Cape and Kruger rather than driving.
Which areas of South Africa suit a first visit?
Cape Town and the Western Cape, the Garden Route, and the Kruger area. That combination gives mountain, coast, wine and wildlife with short internal flights. Save Durban, the Drakensberg and the northern provinces for a second trip.
Is Kruger or Addo better for a first safari?
Kruger has more animals, more camps and a longer dry season, and suits 3–4 nights. Addo is malaria-free, smaller and fits neatly at the end of a Garden Route drive. Choose Addo if malaria tablets or a flight to the lowveld are a problem.
When is the best time to visit South Africa?
October to April for the Cape and the Garden Route. May to October for the bush, when vegetation is thin and wildlife is easier to see. Hermanus whales peak June to November. A two-week trip in shoulder season can catch both.
Do I need to fly between Cape Town and Kruger?
Yes, if time matters. The drive is long and best broken over several days. Flights from Cape Town or Gqeberha to Johannesburg or the Kruger area take about two hours, so most two-week trips fly this leg.
