South Bay is the strip of San Diego County between downtown and the Mexican border: National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and San Ysidro. It is cheaper to sleep in than downtown San Diego, and the Blue Line trolley links the border, Chula Vista and downtown without a car. Base here if you want the border crossing, lower room rates or a beach town with no crowds; base in San Diego if you want the zoo, Balboa Park and nightlife on foot.

San Ysidro sits right at the border; crime is higher than in the rest of the county. Use normal city caution and stay out of anything drug- or gang-related.
Traffic northbound from Mexico is heavy, especially on weekend evenings; allow extra time if you cross back by car.
Imperial Beach water quality can be affected by border runoff; check advisories before swimming.
