The Southeast of Rio Grande do Sul is a flat, coastal region of lagoons, historic towns and the border with Uruguay. Pelotas is the largest city, with a well-preserved 19th-century centre and a food scene built around its Portuguese heritage. Rio Grande, the state's oldest city, has a working port and a compact historic core. Further south, Jaguarão and Chuí sit on the Uruguayan border, the latter being the southernmost point of Brazil. The region is also a gateway to the Lagoa dos Patos and the Lagoa Mirim, two enormous coastal lagoons that dominate the landscape.
