Southeastern Slovenia
Base in Novo Mesto or Brežice for 2 nights; the region is wine, rivers and spas, not a headline sight.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Slovenia ↗Slovenia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Slovenia ↗Motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette (e-vinjeta) bought before you drive on them.
- Slovenia ↗Triglav National Park has rules on parking, camping and drones; follow the signs and do not wild camp.
Southeastern Slovenia is the country's quiet corner: the Krka river loop at Novo Mesto, the Sava and spa town of Brežice, hill castles and vineyards along the Croatian border. It rewards a car and a slow two days, and it works as a stop between Ljubljana and Zagreb rather than a destination on its own. Skip it if your trip is only five days and centred on the Alps and the coast.

Night sequences
- 2 nights
- Novo Mesto 2 nights, Krka loop and one spa or castle
- 3 nights
- Novo Mesto 2 + Brežice 1, driving the Sava valley between them
- Public transport between the small towns is thin; without a car you lose most of the wine roads and spas.
- Many cellar doors and small museums open only at weekends or by appointment — call or check ahead.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brežice | Novo Mesto | 45 min | unknown | Drive or regional train; spa and castle fill an afternoon. |
| Sevnica | Novo Mesto | 50 min | unknown | Castle and Sava views; check opening days before driving out. |
| Ribnica | Novo Mesto | 70 min | unknown | Better paired with a Ljubljana-to-south drive than as a loop. |
Bags between cities
No luggage-forwarding habit here; drive your bags between bases, both towns are under an hour apart.

Summer weekends fill the spas and river spots; spring and autumn are quieter and better for vineyards.
