- Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
- Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
- Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
- Dominican Republic ↗Fill in the free e-Ticket form on the official migration site (eticket.migracion.gob.do) for arrival and departure; ignore sites that charge for it.
- Dominican Republic ↗The land border with Haiti is not a tourist route: do not plan overland travel into Haiti.
- Dominican Republic ↗Avoid driving at night outside cities: unlit roads, motorbikes without lights and animals make it the main risk.
The south is the country's driest, least-developed corner: black-sand coves and cliffs around Barahona, a salt lake below sea level with flamingos and iguanas at Lago Enriquillo, and Bahía de las Águilas near the Haitian border. Roads are long and services thin, so pick one base — Barahona — and treat Pedernales and the lake as day-trips. Two to three nights is enough; four if you add the lake and the border coast.

- Barahona 3 — coast, Polo, Lago Enriquillo day-trip
- 4 nights
- Barahona 3 + Pedernales 1 for Bahía de las Águilas at dawn
- Barahona to Pedernales is a long, hot drive — do not plan it as a same-day return with a beach stop.
- Bahía de las Águilas has no lifeguards, no shade and no vendors; bring water and leave before dark.
- Swimming in Lago Enriquillo is not advised — the water is saline and the shoreline is soft mud.
Day-trips door to door

No luggage-forwarding services in the south; keep bags with you and pack light for Pedernales.

- Barahona coast
- Driest corner of the country; the wet season (May–Jun and Aug–Oct) brings short heavy showers, and Aug–Oct is hurricane season.
- Lago Enriquillo and the border lowlands
- Below sea level and consistently hotter than the coast; start early and carry more water than you think you need.
Nov–Apr is the comfortable window. The lake and the border road are hottest and driest Mar–Sep.
