Stanley
Stanley is a one-street harbour town of about 2,500 people: two nights are enough for the town, and the real plan is which day trip and which outer-island flight you can get in the weather.
Stanley fits in a day on foot, so the trips that go wrong are about access, not sights: a 55 km road transfer from Mount Pleasant that has to be booked, a small-plane seat to the outer islands that depends on wind, and a Volunteer Point 4x4 day that the tour operator decides on the morning. Four small areas cover the town; keep one bed and treat everything else as a day trip from it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello to people you pass in the street: Stanley is small and everyone greets. A wave to a passing driver is normal.
- Sovereignty and 1982: Islanders are proud and sensitive about the war and their right to choose. Do not raise the Malvinas dispute or joke about it; listen if someone talks about it.
- Wildlife: Stay at least 6 m (20 ft) from penguins and give seals and sea lions more space; never block their path to the sea, and never use drones near wildlife.
- Farmland and gates: Land outside Stanley is often private farmland: ask permission, follow tracks and leave gates as you found them.
- Marked ground: Some areas remain signposted from past mine clearance: never leave marked paths or step over a fence.
- Smoko: The tea break at about 10:00 and 15:00 is a real thing: do not expect service to be fast then.
- Tipping: Not expected; a round-up for good service is welcome.
Red lines
- Keep a few metres from penguins and seals; never block their path to the sea.
- Ask before crossing private farmland and close gates behind you.
- The sovereignty dispute is sensitive: avoid taking sides in conversation.
Scams and watch-outs
- There is almost no tourist crime: the usual problem is unclear pricing. Fix the price of a taxi or tour before you go.
- Wildlife tour operators are small: use a company the Visitor Centre or your lodging recommends and get the inclusions in writing.
- Be sceptical of any reseller who claims to sell a 'guaranteed' Volunteer Point seat: the operator decides on the morning.
