Sumatra is the sixth-largest island in the world and the reason most people come is wildlife and volcanoes, not beaches: orangutans at Bukit Lawang, the crater lake at Toba, Kerinci's 3,805 m cone, and surf in the Mentawai and Nias. Distances are the trap — Medan to Padang is a long road day (check current times), and Banda Aceh to Bandar Lampung is far longer. Fly between hubs, sleep three nights in one place, and treat the Trans-Sumatran Highway as a transfer, not a sightseeing route.

Aceh–Medan–Padang in one week is three long road days and no wildlife time.
The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami hit the west coast and Aceh hardest; the Sumatran fault runs the island's length and earthquakes are a real risk — know your exit route from any beach hotel.

North Sumatra (Medan, Toba, Aceh): Equatorial: rain in any month, heaviest Nov–Apr on the west-facing coast. Toba sits at 900 m and is cooler than Medan.
West coast and Mentawai: Surf season is roughly Apr–Oct, when the swell is most consistent; rain is possible year-round.
South (Palembang, Lampung): Haze from land-clearing fires can hit Aug–Oct; check air quality before flying.

Sumatra sits on the equator: hot and humid all year, with two wetter periods rather than a true dry season. Rain usually comes as afternoon downpours.
