Taftan
Skip Taftan unless you are crossing the Iran–Pakistan land border: it is a dusty transit town with no tourist sights, a 12-hour bus ride from Quetta.
Taftan is the first Pakistani town on the overland route from Iran, sitting on the RCD Highway near the border. It has no attractions, limited services and a heavy security presence. Most travellers pass through in a few hours for border formalities and an armed escort to Quetta. Do not plan a stop.

Scams and watch-outs
- Foreigners arriving from Iran must register with the Balochistan Levies; they offer an armed escort for the bus to Quetta for about Rs 1,500.
- No bus company will take a recognisable foreigner without the escort.
- The area is a major smuggling route for drugs, oil and carpets — do not accept packages or offers from strangers.
- Do not stray from the main highway: the desert is lethal without water.
- Confirm the bus departure time at the Levies HQ the day before you travel.
Taftan sits in a high-risk area near the Afghan and Iranian borders. Smuggling is rife, the desert is deadly if you get lost, and the security situation can change without notice. Only travel with a registered escort and your embassy's written approval.
