Taketa
竹田市
Half a day for Oka Castle ruins and cherry blossoms, or a full day adding Nagayu Onsen. Not a base; pass through on a Kyushu road trip.
Taketa is a small castle town in Oita Prefecture, best known for the ruins of Oka Castle — one of Japan's Top 100 Castles and a top cherry-blossom spot. The nearby Nagayu Onsen claims the highest natural carbon-dioxide concentration of any hot spring in Japan. Most travellers stop for a few hours between Beppu and Aso, or spend one night for the onsen.
