Before you start
Welcome to the Old Town & Town Hall Square audio walk in Tallinn. 3 stops: Niguliste Museum (St Nicholas' Church), Town Hall Square and Viru Gate and the Sweater Wall. Base cluster: the medieval lower town, the Town Hall Square and Viru Street; busy when cruise ships are in port.
Town Hall Square, Viru Street and the lanes of the lower Old Town. Underfoot: cobbles; slope: gentle; shade: medium.
Tallinn is a small capital that has been passed between empires for eight centuries and has kept its own language through all of them. The medieval Old Town, the Soviet apartment blocks and the glass offices of a digital state sit within a few kilometres of each other, and you can read each layer on foot.
Before you start: Pickpockets work the square in summer. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
