South Tarawa is a morning-and-evening atoll town: see Betio's relics before the sun is high, rest in a fan or AC room at midday, ride rather than walk after dark — and plan around the few flights.
South Tarawa is a chain of narrow islets joined by causeways, with one main road from Betio in the west to Bonriki and the airport in the east, about 35 km. Around 60,000 people live on it, water is scarce, cash rules and the flight timetable decides the trip. Four clusters cover a first visit; a driver or a minibus joins them.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greetings: Say "mauri" and smile; greet people you pass. A quiet, friendly manner opens more doors than speed.
- Maneaba (meeting house): Follow your host on where to sit; do not stand over seated people, and remove shoes at the edge.
- Dress: Cover shoulders and knees away from the water; swimwear is for the beach or guesthouse.
- War sites: They are graves and family land: do not remove anything, ask before entering a bunker and never climb on memorials.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people, homes, church services and government buildings; never the runway or aircraft.
- Sunday: A day of church and family: keep noise down and expect little to be open.
- Gifts and food: If offered food, accept a little; carry small notes for donations and payments.
