Tegernsee

Give Tegernsee one full day and one night from Munich: lake boat, Bräustüberl beer, a Wallberg ride. Two nights only if you hike.

Tegernsee is a lake town 1 h from Munich by train, ringed by the Wallberg and other foothills. The town itself is small: a former Benedictine monastery, a castle, a brewery and a lakeside promenade. Most travellers come for a day on the water or as a base for easy Alpine walks, and the valley fills with Munich day-trippers on sunny weekends.

Get around

The Bayerische Oberlandbahn runs hourly from Munich to Tegernsee station, in the town centre. Buses (Regionalverkehr Oberbayern) link the villages around the lake; the boat fleet calls at piers from Gmund to St. Quirin. The town is walkable; a car helps for the side valleys but parking near the lake fills early on weekends.

  • Sunny weekends bring heavy traffic on the B307 and B318 and full car parks; arrive before mid-morning or come by train.
  • The valley museum opens only late May to mid-October, afternoons except Mondays: check before you plan a rainy day around it.
  • Mountain weather changes fast above the tree line; carry a rain layer even on a warm morning.
  • Some hotels and restaurants close for a break in November and after the winter season: check dates before booking.

Very safe. The real risks are cold water and fast weather changes on the lake and the hills, plus weekend road traffic: swim only where locals do, and take the train on sunny Sundays.
