Teguise
Base in Costa Teguise or Arrecife and give Teguise one half-day: Sunday market 09:00–14:00, or a quiet weekday morning for the old town.
Teguise was Lanzarote's capital until 1852 and is now a small inland town of about 1,800 people, 12 km north of Arrecife. The old town is compact and walkable in an hour; the Sunday market is the reason most visitors come. Stay here only if you want quiet nights and a car; otherwise sleep on the coast and visit.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Sunday market: the square and car parks fill by 10:30; come at opening or after 13:00.
- Santa Bárbara Castle and the Casa del Timple museum have been closed; check before walking up.
- The access barrier at the castle viewpoint has been reported locked; do not park where you can be trapped.
- Squatters have been reported in the derelict houses and caves beyond the Famara beach track.
- Sun and wind on the coast are stronger than they feel; the Risco de Famara trail has no shade or water.
Teguise is a small, low-crime town and the old town is safe on foot. The real risks are the sun, unshaded coastal trails, closed castle access and driving the narrow roads north after dark.
