Thimphu
ཐིམ་ཕུ
Thimphu is a slow, indoor-outdoor capital at 2,300 m: chorten at first light, museums by late morning, the dzong after office hours — and arrive through Paro with a visa already cleared.
Thimphu has no traffic lights and few sights, so a first visit fits in two full days. The trips that go wrong are the rushed ones: altitude on the first afternoon, dzong dress rules missed at the gate, and a Paro flight cancelled by cloud on the last day. Four small clusters cover the city; Paro and Punakha are trips away from one kept bed.

Essentials
- Currency
- BTN
- Money
- Cash in ngultrum (Nu) is the base: markets, taxis, small shops and museums take cash. Indian rupees in small notes are often accepted (large notes are restricted, check). Cards work at larger hotels and some restaurants; ATMs are in the centre and can run empty.
- Daily spend
- Budget Nu 1,500–2,500 excl. bed and fee · Mid Nu 2,500–5,000 excl. bed and fee · High Nu 5,000+ excl. bed and fee (estimate; check)
- SIM and data
- Buy a tourist SIM at Paro airport or a shop in Thimphu with your passport (Bhutan Telecom B-Mobile or TashiCell); data is cheap and coverage is good in town, patchy on passes.
- Emergency
- Police 113 · Ambulance 112 · Fire 110
- Plugs
- 230 V; sockets vary: types C, D and G are all seen. Bring a universal adapter.
- Tipping
- Not expected. Guides and drivers on tours are tipped by custom, on the order of Nu 500–1,000 a day for a guide and Nu 300–700 for a driver (check with your operator). Round up a restaurant bill.
- Water
- Do not drink from taps. Use bottled or filtered water; hotels usually supply boiled water.
- Toilets
- Hotels, cafés, museums and restaurants; carry tissues and hand gel. Public toilets are few.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Dress at dzongs and temples: Long sleeves, long trousers or skirt, closed shoes, hats off. Officials at the gate can refuse entry.
- Clockwise: Walk clockwise around chortens, temples and prayer wheels; keep the wheels on your right.
- Photographs: No photos inside temples; ask before photographing monks, officials or worshippers.
- Feet and heads: Do not point your feet at altars or people, or touch heads; step over thresholds, never on them.
- Greeting: Say 'Kuzuzangpo la' with a small bow or hands together; hand-shaking is common in towns.
- Tipping guides and drivers: Customary at the end of a trip: ask your operator for the going rate; it is not expected in restaurants.
- Plastic and litter: Plastic bags are banned in shops; carry a cloth bag; do not litter.
Red lines
- Dzongs and temples: no photos inside, no shorts, no hats, shoes off at doors.
- Circle chortens clockwise.
- Ask before photographing monks, worshippers or archery players.
Scams and watch-outs
- Taxis have no reliable meter: agree the fare before you get in and pay in small notes.
- Souvenir shops near the tourist beat can quote high prices for cloth and masks: compare the craft bazaar and the museum shop before you buy.
- If someone offers a very cheap 'local' tour outside a licensed operator, ask for the operator's licence and the written itinerary.
- Fake antiques: check the export rules before you buy anything described as old; many items need a permit to leave the country.
