The honest verdict
Tirana's centre is small and flat, and everything on a first visit is within a 30-minute walk of Skanderbeg Square. What trips people up is the weather and the roads: July and August are hot, winter is wet, and traffic makes any car ride longer than the map suggests. Four clusters cover a first visit; Krujë, Durrës and Berat are trips away from one kept bed.

Three mistakes to avoid

Etiquette: the top three
- Greetings
- A handshake is normal; friends kiss on both cheeks. 'Përshëndetje' or 'Tungjatjeta' opens most conversations, and English is widely understood in the centre.
- Nodding
- Head gestures can be reversed: a side-to-side tilt often means yes, and a quick upward nod can mean no. Confirm with 'po' (yes) and 'jo' (no).
- Mosques and churches
- Shoulders and knees covered; shoes off in a mosque; keep voices low.
