What an embassy can do Issue an emergency travel document (or a new passport) when yours is lost or stolen Give you a list of local lawyers, doctors, interpreters and funeral directors Visit or contact you if you are arrested, and check you are treated fairly Contact family or friends for you, and help them send you money Help in a crisis: natural disaster, unrest, evacuation information Help after a serious crime, a death abroad or a hospital admission (contacts, not costs) What it cannot do Pay your bills, fines, hospital costs or a ticket home (some lend in real emergencies, repaid later: check) Get you out of jail or interfere with local courts and police Give legal advice or act as your lawyer Replace a lost visa for the country you are in (that is the local immigration office) Search for lost property, or book hotels and flights for you Honorary consuls are volunteers: they can advise and pass messages on, but often cannot issue passports.

1. Report it to the local police and get a written report (a copy with a case number) Most embassies ask for it; insurers always do. Tourist police often have English-speaking officers. 2. Report the passport lost or stolen to your own government Many countries let you do this online; it cancels the old number so it cannot be misused. 3. Contact your embassy or consulate (phone or online booking) and ask for an emergency travel document Say when you fly. Many issue the same or next working day; weekends and holidays are slower. 4. Get passport photos (usually two) to your country's size and background rules Photo shops near embassies know the formats. Check the size on the embassy page. 5. Bring any proof of identity and citizenship you have A photocopy or phone photo of the passport, driving licence, national ID card, birth certificate. 6. Bring your travel plans: ticket or booking showing the date you leave An emergency document is often valid only for the trip home or onwards. 7.
