Lost item kit

Report it in the right place, say the right things, and keep the proof insurers and airlines expect — without mixing up baggage deadlines, police reports, and hotel lost-and-found.

Was this useful?

Something missing on a trip? Pick where it happened, fill in what you lost, and get where to report, steps, emails to send, and an evidence checklist. For whole checked bags, use Lost baggage. For insurer deadlines use Insurer notice; for the full claim pack Insurance claim kit. Log outreach in Contact log.

1. Where did you lose it?

Report at the airport before you leave — then follow up in writing

2. Your details

Saved on this device only (voykit:lost-item-kit). Placeholders in templates stay until you type a value.

Desk guidance only — not legal advice. Deadlines (especially airlines and insurers) vary by country and policy. Keep originals where you can.

Where to report

Airline baggage service or customer service desk in the terminal where you landed (or where you noticed the loss). For items left on the aircraft, ask for the cabin-cleaning / lost-and-found contact as well.

Steps in order

  1. Decide checked bag vs cabin

Checked baggage still missing → open a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at baggage services the same day if you can. Small item left in the seat pocket or overhead → lost-and-found / customer relations, not always a PIR.

  2. File before you leave the airport

Get a written reference (PIR number, case ID, or email confirmation). Note the agent name and desk location.

  3. Describe the item precisely

Brand, colour, serial number, distinctive marks, and where on the plane or in the terminal you last had it.

  4. Follow up in writing within airline deadlines

Airlines often require a written complaint within 7 or 21 days for baggage-related loss — use the lost-baggage tool if the whole bag is involved.

  5. Tell your travel insurer

Many policies want notice within 24 hours and a copy of the airline report.
