Getting around in Hue

The Imperial City is large and mostly flat with steps into buildings; tombs and pagodas are steps and slopes. Plan by car and pick a south-bank hotel with a lift.

Palace:
Wide flat paths with raised thresholds into halls; electric buggies inside the grounds (check).
Tombs:
Steps at gates and terraces; Khải Định has 127; Tự Đức and Minh Mạng have long paved paths with short flights.
Getting around:
App cars are the step-free option; book a 7-seat car for a folding wheelchair. Boats need a step down from the pier.
Hotels:
South-bank hotels on Lê Lợi usually have lifts; Citadel homestays and garden houses often have steps and gravel.
Toilets:
Accessible toilets at Vincom and some large hotels; basic toilets at the monuments.

Medicines and health on the ground

The Vietnam guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.

Heat:
35 °C and more in summer: shade and AC every 60–90 minutes, electrolytes, sights before 11:00.
Floods:
Do not wade: flood water carries sewage and hides open drains. Wash cuts at once.
Dengue:
Mosquito-borne; cases rise in the rainy months. Repellent by day as well as dusk.
Food and water:
Bottled or filtered water; busy stalls with fast turnover.
Rabies:
Do not pet dogs or cats; after any bite, go the same day to a vaccination centre (VNVC or the central hospital).
Air:
Usually clean; smoke from burning fields some weeks in the dry season.

More: how much medicine to pack, medicine times across time zones.

Ask your insurer

Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.

  • What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
  • Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
  • Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
  • Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?

Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
