Getting around in Kolonia
Kolonia is hard going on wheels. Pavements are patchy, kerbs are high, and the sites are on uneven ground, mud or water. Plan door-to-door taxis and choose a hotel with a ground-floor room.
- Pavements:
- Patchy, with open drains in places; the main street is the best stretch.
- Getting around:
- Taxis and hotel cars are the step-free option; boats need steps or wading.
- Hotels:
- Ground-floor rooms exist; confirm before you book.
- Toilets:
- Hotels and larger restaurants; rare elsewhere.
Medicines and health on the ground
The Federated States of Micronesia guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.
- Dengue:
- Present in the Pacific: use repellent from dawn to dusk and sleep in a screened or AC room.
- Heat and sun:
- Strong UV and humid heat: sunscreen, a hat, a rash vest and plenty of water.
- Food and water:
- Bottled, filtered or boiled water; fresh, hot food from busy places.
- Diving:
- Do not dive within 24 hours of a flight; the nearest full recompression care is far away, so dive conservatively.
- Medical care:
- Care is limited: carry insurance with evacuation cover and bring your regular medicines.
- Vaccination and clinics:
- Ask a travel clinic several weeks before you travel; the state hospital is basic.
More: how much medicine to pack, medicine times across time zones.
Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
