Getting around in Nadi
Fiji is not built for wheels. Pavements are patchy, kerbs are high and steps are common in town; hotels, Port Denarau and some resorts are better. Plan door-to-door taxi rides and a hotel with a lift.
- Pavements:
- Broken or missing in town; Port Denarau's marina front is smooth.
- Getting around:
- Taxis and hotel transfers; book a van for a folding wheelchair.
- Hotels:
- Larger hotels have accessible rooms; ask for photos.
- Boats:
- Catamarans board by steps; ask the operator about assistance.
Medicines and health on the ground
- Dive certification and logbook · if diving: Cards and insurance that cover diving; many operators ask for a medical form.
- Travel insurance · before flying: Must cover cyclone delays and medical evacuation to Australia or NZ.
- Sun:
- Strong all year: hat, sun cream and rash vest.
- Dengue and mosquitoes:
- Present, peaking in the wet season: repellent by day and dusk.
- Coral cuts:
- Clean and treat cuts at once; wear reef shoes.
- Water:
- Nadi tap water is treated but many prefer bottled; islands may rely on rainwater.
- Sea safety:
- Currents and boat traffic: swim at patrolled or calm areas.
- Medical care:
- Basic care in Nadi; serious cases go to Lautoka or Suva or overseas: carry insurance.

Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
