Getting around in Nuku'alofa

Nuku'alofa is flat, but pavements are broken or absent in places and there are few ramps. Plan on car rides door to door, and ask hotels about steps before you book.

Pavements:
Uneven and interrupted by driveways; the sea wall along Vuna Road is the best walking surface.
Hotels:
Some mid-range and upmarket hotels have ground-floor rooms or a lift; ask for photos of the entrance.
Getting around:
Taxis and hotel cars; ask for a larger car for a folding wheelchair.
Toilets:
Accessible toilets are rare outside hotels; check ahead.

Medicines and health on the ground

  • Travel insurance · before flying: Must cover medical evacuation to NZ and weather delays.
Heat:
Sun and humidity all year. Drink often, cover up and rest at midday.
Dengue and other mosquito illness:
Cases occur, mostly in the wet season. Use repellent and wear long sleeves at dusk.
Water:
Drink bottled or boiled water; avoid raw salad in places you do not trust.
Marine hazards:
Reef cuts infect quickly: clean and cover them. Do not touch jellyfish, cone shells or stonefish.
Medical care:
Basic. Serious cases go by air to Auckland or Fiji; get insurance with evacuation cover.

More: how much medicine to pack, medicine times across time zones.

Ask your insurer

Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.

  • What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
  • Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
  • Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
  • Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?

Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
