Getting around in Tallinn

The Old Town is hard going for wheels: cobbles, steps and steep slopes on Toompea. Telliskivi, Kadriorg, the museums and the trams are much easier; most modern hotels have lifts.

Pavements:
Cobbles in the Old Town; asphalt and flat paved yards in Telliskivi and Kadriorg. Kerb ramps exist at main crossings.
Trams and buses:
Low-floor trams and buses with ramps on most routes; the tram to Kadriorg is step-free at most stops (check).
Taxis:
Standard cars; ask a ride-hailing driver for a car with space for a folding chair. Accessible taxis exist (check).
Toilets:
Accessible toilets in museums, malls and the airport; few on Toompea.

Medicines and health on the ground

  • Travel insurance / EHIC or GHIC · before flying: Non-EU visitors should carry medical cover; required for Schengen visas.
Ticks:
Ticks in grass and forest, April to October. Check skin after walks; ask a travel clinic about tick-borne encephalitis vaccine if you hike.
Cold:
Winter cold is real: dress in layers, cover ears and hands, and warm up in a café before you feel numb.
Sun:
June sun is strong at this latitude and the day is very long: sunscreen and a hat.
Water and food:
Tap water is safe. Restaurants follow EU food standards.
Healthcare:
EU visitors use the EHIC or GHIC (check); others need travel insurance. Pharmacies sell everyday medicines.

Ask your insurer

Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.

  • What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
  • Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
  • Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
  • Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?

Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
