Summary by length
Trinidad carries the culture and the nature; Tobago carries the sea. Almost every good route splits the trip between them, and the only real variable is how many nights you give each island and whether you add a third stop.
Use the table to pick a length, then read the route notes below. Nights are per person, not per room.
| Length | Route | Nights per stop |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Port of Spain → air bridge → Crown Point | Port of Spain 3; Crown Point 4 |
| 10 days | Port of Spain → Arima Valley → ferry → Tobago | Port of Spain 3; Arima Valley 2; Crown Point 2; Castara 3 |
| 14 days | Port of Spain → Tobago → Grenada | Port of Spain 4; Tobago 5; St George's 5 |
| 21 days | Trinidad loop → Tobago → Grenada or Barbados | Trinidad 7; Tobago 7; third island 7 |
Third-island legs need a flight back through Port of Spain or Tobago (check schedules).
7 days: two islands
Days 1–3, Port of Spain. Land, settle in Woodbrook or near the Savannah, and use the first evening on Ariapita Avenue for street food and music. Day 2 is the city: Queen's Park Savannah, the Magnificent Seven, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and downtown around Independence Square by day only. Day 3, take a Maracas Bay beach run in the morning and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary boat in the late afternoon for the scarlet ibis roost.
Days 4–7, Tobago. Fly the air bridge from Port of Spain to Crown Point, about 25 minutes, or take the fast ferry if you prefer the sea. Base at Crown Point for Store Bay, Pigeon Point and a Buccoo Reef glass-bottom or snorkel boat. Day 6 is the island day: Scarborough and Fort King George, then the windward coast road. Day 7, beach and fly out, or ferry back to Trinidad if your international flight leaves from there.
This is the itinerary to book if you have one week and want both islands without rushing. It also works in reverse: Tobago first, Trinidad last, which puts you in Port of Spain for your departure flight.
- Book the air bridge early in high season (Dec–Apr); seats sell out.
- Caroni boats run in the afternoon; book a guide ahead.
- Downtown Port of Spain is a daytime visit; evenings belong to Woodbrook and Ariapita Avenue.
10 days: nature and reefs
Add Arima Valley and Castara to the 7-day plan and the trip changes character. Days 1–3 stay in Port of Spain as above. Days 4–5 move to the Arima Valley for the Asa Wright Nature Centre and Northern Range birding; this is a 1–2 night stop, all year, and the early-morning veranda is the point.
Days 6–10 cross to Tobago, but split the island. Two nights at Crown Point for the reef and Pigeon Point, then three nights at Castara or Speyside for quiet villages, diving and the Main Ridge Forest Reserve. Take the ferry one way for the scenery and fly the air bridge back, which keeps the transfer time down on the return leg.
Ten days is the sweet spot if birds, forest and reef matter more to you than a third country. It also leaves slack for weather: Tobago's dive and boat days can be moved if the sea is up.
- Book Asa Wright and Main Ridge guides ahead.
- Castara and Speyside are small; book accommodation early in Dec–May.
- Ferry one way, air bridge the other, is the usual compromise.
14 days: Trinidad, Tobago and Grenada
Two weeks lets you slow down and add a third island. Days 1–4 in Port of Spain give you Carnival if you time it right, plus Maracas, Caroni and a day for Chaguanas or San Fernando and Pitch Lake in the south. Days 5–9 on Tobago: Crown Point first, then Speyside or Castara, with a Buccoo Reef boat and a Main Ridge walk.
Days 10–14 in Grenada, flying Tobago back via Port of Spain to St George's (check schedules). If the connection is awkward, reverse the order and start in Grenada. The parent country page lists this as the 14-day route, and it is the one to take if you want reef, rainforest and a second island culture in one trip.
Budget an extra transfer day if you are flying long-haul into Trinidad; the air bridge and the Grenada leg rarely line up perfectly on the same afternoon.
- Check Tobago–Grenada connections before booking; many routings pass through Port of Spain.
- Carnival dates move each year; confirm before locking flights.
21 days: slow travel
Three weeks is enough to stop counting transfers. Give Trinidad a full week: Port of Spain, the Northern Range, Grande Riviere for leatherback turtles in season (Mar–Aug), and the south around San Fernando and Pitch Lake. Then a week on Tobago split between Crown Point and a quiet village, with time for diving, the forest reserve and doing very little.
The final week is a choice: Grenada, Barbados or more Tobago. If you are still moving, fly back through Port of Spain. If you are not, stay on Tobago — the island rewards a second week more than most people expect.
This length suits remote workers and slow travellers. Check long-stay accommodation and car rental terms before you commit.
- Turtle season at Grande Riviere runs Mar–Aug; guided night walks only.
- Long stays: confirm weekly rates and deposit rules.
When to change the plan
Weather and season move the dates more than the route. Jan–May is the driest window on both islands and the safest bet for a first trip. Carnival, in Feb or Mar, is the reason many people come, but it also means Port of Spain hotels sell out months ahead and prices spike.
Turtle watching at Grande Riviere runs Mar–Aug, so a nature-first trip can sit outside the dry season. Hurricane season runs roughly Jun–Nov; Tobago is less exposed than some Caribbean islands but still gets rain and the odd storm.
If your international flight leaves from Port of Spain, end the trip in Trinidad, not Tobago. If you are short on time, cut the third island before you cut Tobago nights — the 7-day split is the one that most often gets squeezed.
| If you want | Go | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dry weather, easy first trip | Jan–May | Nothing; book the 7-day split |
| Carnival | Feb–Mar | Book Port of Spain months ahead; expect higher prices |
| Turtles | Mar–Aug | Add Grande Riviere, 1–2 nights |
| Birding | All year | Add Arima Valley, 1–2 nights |
| Diving and reef | Dec–May | Add Speyside or Castara, 2–3 nights |
Practical notes
The air bridge between Port of Spain and Tobago is the fast link, about 25 minutes; the fast ferry is slower but scenic and cheaper. Book both ahead in high season. On Trinidad you will want a rental car or maxi-taxis for Maracas, Caroni and the south; Tobago is small enough to manage with local transport and taxis, though a car helps for the windward coast.
Money is Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TTD); some tourist businesses quote in USD, but you will get a better rate paying in TTD. Tipping follows the US pattern in restaurants. Check visa rules for your passport before booking — many Western passports enter visa-free for short stays, but confirm your own case.
Pack for heat, rain and mosquitoes, and bring reef-safe sunscreen for Tobago. Book guides for Caroni, Asa Wright and Main Ridge in advance; they are small operations and fill up.
- Air bridge: 25 minutes, book ahead.
- Fast ferry: slower, cheaper, scenic.
- Rental car on Trinidad; taxis and tours on Tobago.
- TTD cash for markets and small food stalls.
