Ulaanbaatar is a car-and-coat city: do the square and the monastery in the morning, leave two hours for any airport ride, and check the season before you pack — winter is −20 °C and smoggy, summer is short and busy.
Ulaanbaatar's sights are spread over several kilometres of congested roads, on ground that ices over for five months. The city is small enough for one base and four clusters, but every ride takes twice as long at rush hour, the airport is an hour out of town, and cold or smog can cancel an outdoor day. The trips that go wrong assume a 15-minute taxi, arrive at night with a hotel that will not open, or plan an evening at Zaisan in January.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Temples and monasteries: Walk clockwise, take your hat off indoors, cover shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing monks or inside halls.
- Gers: Do not step on the threshold. Enter with the right foot, walk clockwise round the stove, and accept a bowl of tea or airag with your right hand.
- Greetings: Say 'sain baina uu' and shake hands lightly; older people may take both hands.
- Right hand: Give and receive food, gifts and money with the right hand or both hands.
- Vodka and food: If you are offered a drink or food, accept the first round even if you only touch it to your lips.
- Photos: Do not photograph soldiers, police or government buildings. Ask before photographing people.
- Dress: Casual is fine in the city; dress covered for religious sites.

Scams and watch-outs

- Pickpockets and bag-slashers at Sukhbaatar Square, the State Department Store, Naran Tuul market and on buses: front pocket, zipped bag, nothing on a café table.
- Ger-camp or countryside tour packages sold on the street at a big discount: compare two written quotes and pay through a licensed operator, not cash to a driver.
- Someone 'helping' you at an ATM or offering to change money: use bank branches and hotel desks only.
