Västerås is Sweden's fifth-largest city and one of its oldest, founded around 990 at the mouth of the Svartån where it meets Lake Mälaren. It is a working industrial city rather than a tourist set piece, and that is the appeal: a compact centre you can cross on foot in 20 minutes, a 13th-century cathedral, a castle tied to Gustav Vasa's Reformation decision of 1527, and a 340 km network of asphalt cycle paths.
