Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the St Peter's Square and Basilica audio walk in Vatican. 4 stops: St Peter's Dome (Cupola), St Peter's Basilica, Scavi: the Vatican Necropolis and St Peter's Square. The basilica and the square: go early or after 16:00; long security queues at midday; no ticket for the basilica itself.

St Peter's Basilica, the square with its colonnade and the Sant'Uffizio side (approximate box). Underfoot: cobbles and stone; slope: flat; shade: low.

The Vatican is a country of about 44 hectares built around a tomb, a church, a palace and a museum. It also covers the streets around the walls, where lunch and dinner cost far less than they do in sight of the dome.

Before you start: Covered shoulders and knees for the basilica; large bags are not allowed. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. St Peter's Dome (Cupola)

    Cupola di San Pietro

    Look for

    • Lift or first stairs to the roof
    • Interior gallery at the drum
    • Final spiral stairs

Stop 1 of 4: St Peter's Dome (Cupola). Locally, Cupola di San Pietro. Arrival point: Right side of the basilica facade after the security check; the entrance is signed 'Cupola'.

A climb of up to 551 steps for the best view over Rome: go at opening, take the lift for the first stage if you want to save your knees, and skip it if you dislike narrow stairs.

Look for Lift or first stairs to the roof: You arrive on the basilica roof with domes, statues and a souvenir stall. Look for Interior gallery at the drum: A ring inside the dome with a view down to the altar; keep moving. Look for Final spiral stairs: Narrow and steep; one-way flow.

Not for anyone who dislikes tight, curved stairs or heights. Short queue at opening; longest 10:00–14:00 in summer. Allowed on the roof and the dome gallery; no flash inside the basilica.

Walk:Next, stop 2: St Peter's Basilica. It's about 2 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. St Peter's Basilica

    Basilica di San Pietro

    Look for

    • Michelangelo's Pietà
    • The dome and Bernini's baldachin
    • The dome climb

Stop 2 of 4: St Peter's Basilica. Locally, Basilica di San Pietro. Arrival point: Walk across the square to the right side for the security check.

Free entry with a security queue: go early or late, cover shoulders and knees, and skip the dome climb if the queue is long.

Look for Michelangelo's Pietà: By the right entrance. Look for The dome and Bernini's baldachin: The centre of the basilica. Look for The dome climb: A separate ticket; a steep stair.

St Peter's Basilica is the largest church in Christendom by interior area, and it is easy to underestimate. A common route shortcut leads guided groups from the Sistine Chapel directly into St Peter's Basilica, and individual visitors are usually not allowed to use it (check the current policy).

Covered shoulders and knees; silence in the nave; no large bags. Long security queues late morning and after the Wednesday audience.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Scavi: the Vatican Necropolis. It's about 5 minutes on foot, about 100 metres to the west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

A guided walk through a buried Roman burial ground under St Peter's: reserve weeks ahead and go with a firm booking, as you cannot join on the day.

Look for The necropolis street: A row of Roman family tombs with painted plaster and small rooms. Look for The area of the traditional tomb: Where tradition places the apostle's burial. Look for Passages to the grottoes: The route ends near the basilica floor or grottoes. For a photo: No photography on the tour, —.
