Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Dress: Shoulders and knees covered for the Museums and the Basilica; guards refuse entry. Sleeveless tops, short shorts and short skirts fail.
- Silence: Silence is asked for in the Sistine Chapel and in the Basilica during services; guards say "silenzio" and it is enforced.
- Photography: No photos in the Sistine Chapel. Flashes are banned in most galleries. Photograph the Swiss Guards from the side without blocking the gate.
- Queues: Join the security line and stay in it; leaving a place for a friend rarely works and can cause a row.
- Greetings: Buongiorno on entering a shop or café; a small bar tip is €0.10–0.50 or nothing.
- Services: During Mass the Basilica side chapels are closed to sightseeing; wait until the service ends.
Red lines
- Cover shoulders and knees; carry a scarf in summer.
- No photography in the Sistine Chapel.
- Do not pose or block the guards at their posts.
Scams and watch-outs
- Touts selling skip-the-line tickets in the street: buy only on the official site.
- Fake guides who approach you in the queue: book a guide through the official Museums site.
