Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Victoria Falls Hotel and Zambezi Drive audio walk in Victoria Falls. 3 stops: The Big Tree (baobab), Zambezi National Park and Zambezi sunset cruise. Sunset cluster: the colonial-era hotel terrace with a view of the bridge and spray, and the shops along the road; tea or a sundowner, then a taxi home.

The hotel grounds and the stretch of road around them, not the hotels further up the river. Underfoot: paved road, lawns; slope: flat; shade: medium.

Victoria Falls is a town built around a single waterfall and the river that feeds it. It is written for visitors from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, who will need to plan cash, a visa and a taxi for the evenings.

Before you start: Dress code applies on the terrace at some hours; ask when you book. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. The Big Tree (baobab)

    The Big Tree

    Look for

    • The trunk and shade
    • Trunk with a person for scale

Stop 1 of 3: The Big Tree (baobab). Locally, The Big Tree.

A 15 to 20 minute stop to see a very large old baobab: worth it if you are driving past or have a spare quarter of an hour, and not worth a special trip. Confirm the location with your driver.

Look for The trunk and shade: Walk around the trunk. For a photo: Trunk with a person for scale, any daylight.

How old is the Big Tree? Estimates vary and are hard to check; treat any age you hear as approximate.

Do not carve or climb the tree. Quiet; a few tour vans mid-morning. Allowed. Baobabs are among the oldest and biggest trees in Africa; this one is estimated to be very old (age claims vary, so treat them as estimates). It is a free roadside stop; no fee expected. Baboons and vendors may be nearby; keep your bag closed.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Zambezi National Park. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk, about 9 minutes. The next stop is about 4.9 km to the north-west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Zambezi National Park

    Look for

    • Riverfront drive
    • Chamabonda or inland tracks
    • Picnic or sundowner stop

Stop 2 of 3: Zambezi National Park. Arrival point: Hotel pickup or taxi to the gate along the river road (confirm).

A half-day game drive 5 km from town for elephants, antelope and river views: go at 06:30 or 15:30, book a licensed guide or your hotel, and skip it if you already have a Chobe or Hwange trip planned.

Look for Riverfront drive: Views of the Zambezi and wildlife at the water. Look for Chamabonda or inland tracks: Open woodland and pans with antelope. Look for Picnic or sundowner stop: A short stop with your guide.

The Tonga and Leya people who lived along the middle Zambezi called them Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders, and treated the spray-fed forest and the gorge as sacred ground. Cecil Rhodes had a plan for a line from the Cape to Cairo, and in 1904 the rails reached the Zambezi, where a steel arch bridge was built across the Batoka Gorge and opened in 1905. The falls are a wall of water about 1.7 kilometres wide, where the Zambezi drops roughly 100 metres into a narrow gorge.

Stay inside the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise. Best at first light and late afternoon; midday is hot and quiet. Allowed; no flash at night; do not attract animals.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Zambezi sunset cruise. It's about 10 minutes on foot, about 4.8 km to the south-east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Zambezi sunset cruise

    Look for

    • Boarding and safety talk
    • River cruise
    • Sunset stop

Stop 3 of 3: Zambezi sunset cruise. Arrival point: Hotel pickup or taxi to the jetty upriver (confirm).

A 2 to 2.5 hour boat trip on the upper Zambezi with drinks and snacks at dusk: book for 16:30 to 17:00, take a jacket for the ride back, and pick a small boat if you can.

Look for Boarding and safety talk: A short briefing. Look for River cruise: Slow drift past islands and banks. Look for Sunset stop: Drinks and photos.

The Zambezi's flow is highest in March to May, after the summer rains upstream, and lowest in October to December. Above the falls the Zambezi is a broad, slow river with islands, reed beds and sandbanks. A sunset cruise gives a calm, close view of most of this without leaving the water, and a game drive in Zambezi National Park, about 5 km upstream of town, adds antelope, giraffe, buffalo and sable.

Stay seated when the boat moves. Most boats fill on clear evenings; book a day ahead. Allowed; keep lenses dry.
