Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is a two-or-three-day town: see the falls at opening, rest through the heat, take the bridge and the river in the late afternoon, and use a taxi after dark, because elephants and other animals walk the streets.
The falls are 2 km from town, the heat peaks at midday and, from March to May, the spray can hide the view and soak you. The trips that go wrong walk between hotels after dark, arrive with too little cash in small notes, or plan Hwange or Chobe on the same day as the falls. Four areas cover a first visit; the safari is a trip away from one kept bed.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greetings: Greet first with 'good morning' and a handshake; asking 'How are you?' is expected before business.
- Photography: Ask before you photograph people. Never photograph the border post, police, soldiers or government buildings.
- Tipping: 10 percent in restaurants if no service charge is added; US$1–3 for a guide, driver or porter.
- Bargaining: Expected at stalls; friendly and short. Walking away politely is fine.
- Dress: Casual is normal; cover up when visiting villages and churches.
- Wildlife: Keep your distance from animals, do not feed them and do not approach elephants on foot.
- Left hand: Give and receive with the right hand or both hands; avoid pointing at people.
