For a first trip, pick two of Vietnam's three regions: Hanoi and Ha Long or Ninh Binh in the north, Hoi An and Hue in the centre, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong in the south. Ten to fourteen nights covers two regions well; seven nights means north plus Hoi An only.

Summary by region, month and cost
Vietnam runs on three travel zones with different weather. Match the region to the month, then match the nights to the place. Costs below are 2026 estimates for one person per day, mid-range: dorm bed or simple hotel, local food, some transport.
| Region | Best months | Anchor stops | Nights | Daily cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North | Oct–Apr (Hanoi); Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov (bays, mountains) | Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Sa Pa, Ha Giang | 7–9 | 1,200,000–2,500,000 VND |
| Centre | Feb–Aug | Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Phong Nha | 6–8 | 1,000,000–2,200,000 VND |
| South | Dec–Apr | Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, Con Dao | 5–7 | 1,200,000–2,800,000 VND |
Costs are 2026 estimates and swing with season and island resorts; check current fares and room rates before booking.
How to choose, step by step
Step 1: count your nights. Seven nights fits the north plus Hoi An. Ten nights adds Ho Chi Minh City. Fourteen nights is the classic north-to-south line: Hanoi, Ha Long, Hue, Hoi An, Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh City.
Step 2: pick two regions, not three. Flying Hanoi to Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City is fast; overnight buses and trains eat a day each way. Add one spare night per week for storms or delays.
Step 3: give each stop its minimum. Hanoi 3–4 nights, Hoi An 3, Hue 2, Ho Chi Minh City 2–3, one night aboard in Ha Long Bay, 1–2 in Ninh Binh, 1–2 in the Mekong with a night in Can Tho.
Step 4: check the month against the region. The north is cool and often damp Dec–Mar; the centre is driest Feb–Aug and Hoi An floods most Octobers; the south is driest Dec–Apr.
Step 5: book the long legs first. Domestic flights between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City set your dates; everything else can stay flexible.
- First trip, 10–14 nights: Hanoi → Ha Long → Hue → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City
- Beach add-on: Phu Quoc (Nov–Apr) or Nha Trang, or Quy Nhon for a quieter coast
- Mountain add-on: Ha Giang loop (Sep–Nov) or Sa Pa (Mar–May, Sep–Nov)
- Cave add-on: Phong Nha – Ke Bang (Mar–Aug)
Notes before you commit
Hoi An's old town floods most Octobers; boats replace walking in the streets for a few days. Build in a spare night if you travel then.
Ha Long Bay cruises are one night aboard for most travellers; two nights only pays off if you want kayaking and a quieter Lan Ha Bay route.
Phu Quoc has a 30-day island visa exemption that differs from the mainland rules; check it against your passport before you book the island as your entry point.
Tet (Vietnamese New Year, late Jan or Feb) closes many family businesses for several days and pushes domestic transport to its busiest. Book trains, flights and rooms early if your trip overlaps.
Typhoons hit the central coast roughly Sep–Nov; the north sees heavy rain in Jul–Aug. Travel insurance that covers trip disruption is worth having on a multi-region route.

Questions people ask
What are the best places to visit in Vietnam?
Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh in the north; Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An in the centre; Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc in the south. For a first trip, choose two of those three regions.
How many days do you need in Vietnam?
Seven nights covers the north plus Hoi An. Ten nights adds Ho Chi Minh City. Fourteen nights fits the classic north-to-south line with two domestic flights. Add one spare night per week for storms or delays.
Which areas of Vietnam suit a first visit?
The north (Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh) and the centre (Hue, Hoi An) are the easiest first trip: short internal flights, dense sights and good food. Add the south if you have ten nights or more.
What is the best month to visit Vietnam?
There is no single best month, because the country has three weather zones. Hanoi is best Oct–Apr, the centre Feb–Aug, and the south Dec–Apr. Pick the region to match your dates.
Is ten days enough for Vietnam?
Yes, if you fly the long legs. A common ten-night route is Hanoi, Ninh Binh, one night in Ha Long Bay, then Hoi An, then two nights in Ho Chi Minh City, with the Mekong as a day trip.
Should I visit Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh?
Both, if you can. Ninh Binh is 2 hours from Hanoi and works as 1–2 nights of rowing boats and rice fields. Ha Long Bay is best as one night aboard a cruise. Ninh Binh is the cheaper, quieter option.
