Wentworth Falls
Base here for one night if you want the Blue Mountains' best day walk without Katoomba crowds; two nights if you also want Leura and Blackheath.
Wentworth Falls is a small Blue Mountains town about 100 km west of Sydney, quieter than Katoomba and Leura but with the same cliff country on its doorstep. The falls and the National Pass walking track start about 2 km south of the village, so you can arrive by train, walk from the station and sleep in the same street. Most visitors use it as a one-night stop on a Blue Mountains loop, or as a day trip from Sydney. National Pass and the other cliff tracks open and close with weather and park alerts: check the NSW National Parks site before you travel and again on the morning you walk.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- National Pass has steep stair sections and unfenced cliff ledges; closed or partly closed after heavy rain — check the NSW National Parks site before you set out.
- Bushfire risk in summer: check the NSW RFS and National Parks alerts, and follow any total fire ban or park closure.
- Tracks can be icy and slippery in winter; wear shoes with grip.
- Friday afternoon and holiday-weekend traffic on the Great Western Highway out of Sydney can add hours.
- Mobile signal drops in the valley below the cliffs; tell someone your route and expected return.
A safe, low-crime town; the real risks are cliff edges on unfenced sections of National Pass, slippery steps after rain, and summer bushfire closures. Check park alerts before every walk.
