Western North 24 Parganas is the industrial and commuter belt of the district, stretching along the Hooghly River north of Kolkata. It is best known for the historic cantonment town of Barrackpore, the riverfront ghats and temples of Panihati and Khardaha, and the jute-mill towns of Naihati, Halisahar, Bhatpara and Kanchrapara. The area is compact — most places are 10–30 minutes apart by local train — so you can sleep in one town and explore the rest as day trips.
