Windhoek

Windhoek is a one-night-plus city before a self-drive loop: walk the heritage hill (Christuskirche, Alte Feste, Independence Museum) in the morning, use a taxi for everything else, and be off the streets before dark.

Windhoek is small, orderly and quiet, and its sights sit on one hill and one mall. The trips that go wrong start at the airport: it is about 45 km from town, so a late landing with no transfer arranged ends in an expensive ride or a hotel near the airport. Walking after dark in the centre is the second problem. Four clusters cover a first visit; Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha are trips away from the loop, not from this bed.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

Greetings: Greet before you ask a question: a handshake and “good morning” are normal in shops and offices.
Photos: Ask before photographing people; do not photograph police, soldiers or parliament security.
Tipping: Around 10% in restaurants where not added; a small tip for guides, car guards and hotel porters.
Driving: Traffic drives on the left; give way to pedestrians at crossings and watch for minibus taxis stopping without warning.
History: The colonial period and the 1904–08 genocide of the Herero and Nama peoples are painful subjects: listen more than you speak when locals raise them.

Red lines

Ask before photographing people, especially at Soweto Market.
Do not photograph police, soldiers or the parliament grounds beyond the public paths.

Scams and watch-outs

Street helpers offering to “guard” a car or show a shortcut expect a tip: a small note is normal, more is not.
Unofficial taxis with no meter: agree the fare or use your hotel’s radio taxi.
Fake “charity” or craft-donation requests near the mall: decline politely.
