Airports and routes
Zambia has two airports that matter to visitors. Kenneth Kaunda International (LUN) outside Lusaka is the hub: it takes the widest range of regional and intercontinental flights and is the natural arrival point if you are heading to South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi or Kafue. Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International (LVI) at Livingstone is smaller and sits about 10 km from Victoria Falls, so it saves you a domestic hop if the falls are your first stop.
There are no nonstop flights from North America, Europe, Australia or New Zealand. Nearly every itinerary routes through a single hub — Johannesburg is the most common, with Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha and Dubai as the usual alternatives. From those hubs the final leg to Lusaka runs roughly 2–4 hours, and to Livingstone a little longer or with a stop.
Domestic links between Lusaka and the safari airstrips (Mfuwe for South Luangwa, Jeki and Royal for the Lower Zambezi, Kasanka, Liuwa) are small-plane charters or scheduled bush flights, usually booked through your camp. They are priced separately and luggage is strictly limited by weight, so pack soft bags.
| Airport | Code | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kenneth Kaunda International | LUN | Lusaka, South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue | Widest connections; about 25 km from central Lusaka |
| Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International | LVI | Victoria Falls, Livingstone town | About 10 km from the falls; fewer long-haul options |
| Mfuwe | MFU | South Luangwa | Small planes from Lusaka; weight-limited luggage |
| Ndola (Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe) | NLA | Copperbelt | Regional flights; useful if you cross from the DRC side |
Flight times by origin
Times below are door-to-door flying time including one connection, not the length of a single flight. Add 2–3 hours at the connecting airport and remember that schedules shift with the season, so treat these as planning bands rather than fixed numbers.
| From | Typical total time | Usual connection |
|---|---|---|
| New York or Washington | 18–24 hours | Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Doha or Dubai |
| London | 13–16 hours | Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha or Dubai |
| Toronto | 20–26 hours | Johannesburg, Addis Ababa or Doha |
| Sydney or Melbourne | 22–30 hours | Johannesburg, Doha or Dubai |
| Auckland | 26–34 hours | Dubai, Doha or Johannesburg |
| Johannesburg | 2–3 hours | Nonstop to Lusaka or Livingstone |
Land and water entry
Zambia is landlocked, so there is no sea arrival. Road crossings are straightforward and busy with trucks, but allow time: paperwork at the border can take 30–90 minutes, longer on public holidays.
The most useful crossings for travellers are Kazungula, where Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia meet near Victoria Falls; Chirundu and Kariba on the Zimbabwe side; Nakonde from Tanzania on the Great North Road; Mchinji from Malawi near Chipata; and Katima Mulilo from Namibia's Caprivi Strip. If you are combining Zambia with Zimbabwe or Botswana at Victoria Falls, the KAZA UNIVISA covers all three and can save money and queueing — see the visa page for the current rules.
Cross-border buses and minibuses run between Lusaka and Harare, Lusaka and Lilongwe, and Livingstone and Victoria Falls town. They are cheap and slow. If you drive yourself, note that Zambia drives on the left, roads outside the main corridors are potholed, and fuel stations are sparse in the bush.
- Kazungula — Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia, near Victoria Falls
- Chirundu and Kariba — Zimbabwe
- Nakonde — Tanzania, on the Great North Road
- Mchinji — Malawi, near Chipata
- Katima Mulilo — Namibia's Caprivi Strip
Practical notes
Book long-haul legs early for the June–October dry season, when safari camps fill and fares to Lusaka and Livingstone rise. Arriving in Lusaka and leaving from Livingstone (or the reverse) usually costs little more than a return and saves a backtrack.
On arrival, buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport if you need data straight away, and carry some US dollars or kwacha for the taxi or shuttle into town — cards are accepted at hotels but not everywhere else. Travel insurance that covers light aircraft and safari activities is worth arranging before you fly, because bush flights and walking safaris are often excluded from basic policies.
- Pack soft bags: bush flights cap luggage weight
- Allow a night in Lusaka if you connect to a safari airstrip the next morning
- Keep your yellow-fever certificate with your passport if you are arriving from a risk country

Questions people ask
What is the best airport to fly into for Zambia?
Lusaka (LUN) if you are heading to the safari parks, because it has the most connections and the bush flights leave from there. Livingstone (LVI) if Victoria Falls is your first stop — it is about 10 km from the falls.
How long is the flight to Zambia from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and NZ?
There are no nonstops. Expect roughly 13–16 hours total from London, 18–24 from New York, 20–26 from Toronto, 22–30 from Sydney and 26–34 from Auckland, each including one connection, usually Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Doha or Dubai.
Can I enter Zambia by land or sea?
By land, yes — Kazungula, Chirundu, Kariba, Nakonde, Mchinji and Katima Mulilo are the main crossings. Zambia is landlocked, so there is no sea arrival; you reach it overland from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi or Tanzania.
Do I need a visa to enter Zambia?
Most Western passports enter visa-free or can get a visa on arrival, but rules change. Check the Zambia visa and entry requirements page for your passport before booking, and consider the KAZA UNIVISA if you also cross to Zimbabwe or Botswana.
How do I get from Lusaka to the safari parks?
Small scheduled or charter flights from Lusaka to airstrips such as Mfuwe for South Luangwa or Jeki for the Lower Zambezi, usually booked through your camp. Driving is possible but long and slow, and the parks are far apart.
Is it cheaper to fly into Lusaka or Livingstone?
Fares are usually similar, but Livingstone has fewer long-haul options, so you may pay more or add a connection. Arriving in one and leaving from the other often costs little extra and saves a domestic flight.
