Quick answer

Zimbabwe splits into two kinds of stay: the falls and the bush. Almost every first trip is 2–3 nights in Victoria Falls town, then 3–4 nights in a safari camp in Hwange, Mana Pools or on Lake Kariba. The two are linked by road transfer or light aircraft, not by a single hotel.

Cities are gateways, not destinations. Harare and Bulawayo each deserve one night if your flight lands or leaves there, and Great Zimbabwe or the Matobo Hills need one or two nights nearby to be worth the drive.

Safari camp rates usually include meals, game drives and park fees; lodge rates usually do not. Check what is included before comparing.

Victoria Falls: where to stay

Victoria Falls town is small and walkable. Lodges on the eastern side sit within 10–20 minutes on foot of the falls entrance and the craft market, which means no taxi for sunrise entry. Properties further out along the Zambezi river drive are quieter and greener but need a shuttle or taxi for every meal.

The trade-off is price against proximity. A mid-range guesthouse in the town centre costs less than a riverfront lodge, and you spend the difference on activities. If you are only there for two nights, pay for the walkable location; if you have four nights and want to sit by the river between activities, the out-of-town lodges earn their rate.

Book the falls side of town if you plan to walk into the rainforest at opening time, and the river side if your days are built around sunset cruises and game drives in Zambezi National Park.

  • Walkable to the falls: town centre and the roads just east of the entrance
  • Quieter, river views: Zambezi drive lodges, 5–10 minutes by car
  • Budget: hostels and guesthouses in the town centre, US$20–50 (2026 estimate)
  • Check whether the rate includes breakfast and airport transfer

Safari areas: Hwange, Mana Pools and Kariba

In Hwange, the choice is between the main camp area near the eastern gate, which has more traffic and easier access, and the private concessions in the north and west, which cost more and deliver quieter game viewing. Most visitors stay inside a camp on a full-board package, so the room matters less than the guide and the vehicle.

Mana Pools is a seasonal park: camps operate roughly April to October and close in the rains, when access roads become impassable. It is a walking and canoeing destination, so pick a camp that includes those activities rather than one that only drives. Lake Kariba is different again: houseboats let you sleep on the water and move between bays, while Matusadona lodges give you shore-based game drives.

Harare and Bulawayo: gateway nights

Harare is where many international flights land, and most travellers spend one night before flying or driving on. Stay in the northern suburbs such as Borrowdale or Avondale for restaurants, guesthouses and a safer evening walk, or near the airport if you have an early departure. The city centre is functional rather than pleasant after dark.

Bulawayo is the base for the Matobo Hills, about 40–50 minutes by road, and for trains and roads heading south. A night or two in the suburbs gives you rhino tracking and rock art as a day trip without moving hotels. Both cities are useful, neither is the reason you came.

  • Harare: northern suburbs for food and guesthouses; airport hotels for early flights
  • Bulawayo: suburban guesthouses, 40–50 minutes from Matobo Hills
  • One night is usually enough in either city
  • Check that the property has a backup water tank and generator

What it costs and when to book

Zimbabwe prices in US dollars in practice. Budget travellers find hostels and guesthouses at US$20–50 a night in Victoria Falls and Harare. Mid-range lodges run about US$80–200. Safari camps are priced per person all-inclusive and start around US$300–400 per person per night, rising sharply in the peak July–October window.

Book safari camps 6–12 months ahead for the dry season; the best guides and the family rooms go first. Falls-side lodges are easier and 2–3 months is usually enough, though the July school holidays and the period around the Victoria Falls carnival fill early. The green season, roughly November to March, brings lower rates and dramatic skies but some camps close.

Pay attention to what a rate includes. Park fees, transfers and activities are often separate at lodges and included at camps, which can reverse the ranking of two apparently similar prices.

Practical notes

Power cuts are common outside the main tourist properties, and water pressure can drop. Ask before booking whether the property runs a generator and a backup water tank; in Victoria Falls and the safari camps this is usually yes, in smaller city guesthouses it is worth confirming.

Zimbabwe uses type D and G plugs at 220–240 V, so UK travellers need no adapter and US travellers need one. Mobile coverage is reasonable in towns and weak in the parks; a local SIM or eSIM is cheaper than roaming. Most lodges accept cards, but cash in US dollars is still the reliable fallback for fuel, tips and small purchases.

If you are combining Zimbabwe with the Zambian side of the falls or with Chobe in Botswana, check the KAZA UNIVISA before you book accommodation, because it changes where you can cross and how many nights you need on each side.

Questions people ask

Where is the best area to stay in Zimbabwe?

Victoria Falls town for a first trip, 2–3 nights, because it is walkable to the falls and the bridge. Then a safari camp in Hwange, Mana Pools or on Lake Kariba for 3–4 nights. Harare and Bulawayo are one-night gateways, not bases.

How much does a hotel cost in Zimbabwe?

Hostels and guesthouses run about US$20–50 a night, mid-range lodges US$80–200, and all-inclusive safari camps US$300–600 per person per night (2026 estimate). Safari rates usually include meals, drives and park fees; lodge rates often do not.

When should I book accommodation in Zimbabwe?

Book safari camps 6–12 months ahead for July–October, when the best guides and rooms go first. Falls-side lodges are usually fine 2–3 months out, but book earlier for the July school holidays and the Victoria Falls carnival period.

Should I stay in Victoria Falls town or outside it?

Stay in town if you want to walk to the falls at opening time and eat out without a taxi. Stay at a riverfront lodge outside town if you want quiet, river views and are happy to use a shuttle for every meal and activity.

Is it safe to stay in Harare or Bulawayo?

Yes, with normal city care. Stay in the northern suburbs of Harare or the suburbs of Bulawayo, avoid walking in city centres after dark, and use a hotel-arranged taxi rather than hailing one on the street.

Do safari camps in Zimbabwe close in the rainy season?

Some do. Mana Pools camps generally operate about April to October and close when access roads flood; Hwange and Victoria Falls properties stay open year-round. Confirm dates directly with the camp before booking flights.
