Summary by trip length

Angola is large and its roads are slow, so the itinerary question is really a flying question. Match the length of your trip to one flight corridor rather than trying to see the whole country overland.

The table below gives the route, the nights and the one thing that decides whether it works. Flight frequencies change; confirm schedules before booking.

3 weeks (21 days)The 14-day loop plus Mbanza Kongo and/or Iona National ParkAdd 2 nights Mbanza Kongo or 2–4 nights IonaBoth add a separate flight or a long expedition drive

Nights are a starting point; add a buffer night in Luanda before any international departure.

7 days: capital and southern escarpment

This is the itinerary to pick if you have one week and want the two things Angola does best: a big, strange capital and the southern escarpment. Spend 3 nights in Luanda for the Fortaleza de São Miguel, the Marginal promenade and the Ilha de Luanda seafront, then fly south to Lubango for 4 nights.

From Lubango, the day trips are the point: Serra da Leba and its switchback road, the Tundavala Fissure, the Cristo Rei statue above the city, and — if you have a full day and a driver — the Namibe coast and the Arco lagoon. Tundavala is often misty early, so go mid-morning.

Do not add Kalandula Falls to a 7-day trip. Reaching it means a long drive from Malanje and at least one overnight, which eats the week.

  • Day 1–3: Luanda — fortress in the morning, Ilha at sunset
  • Day 4: fly Luanda → Lubango; afternoon at Cristo Rei
  • Day 5: Serra da Leba and Tundavala
  • Day 6: Namibe coast day trip or a slower Lubango day
  • Day 7: fly Lubango → Luanda; buffer before your flight home

10 days: falls, highlands and desert

Ten days lets you add Kalandula Falls without losing the south. Base yourself in Malanje, go to the falls with a driver, and stay overnight rather than attempting a return in one day. The falls are strongest April–June; outside that window they are thinner but the trip still works.

Then fly Luanda–Lubango, spend 3 nights on the escarpment, and drive down the Serra da Leba pass to Moçâmedes (Namibe) for 3 nights on the desert coast. Fly out of Namibe rather than driving back.

14 days: the full western loop

Two weeks buys the classic loop: Luanda, the Malanje waterfalls and black rocks, the colonial coast at Benguela and Lobito, the southern escarpment, and the Namibe desert. The trick is to fly the long legs — Luanda to Catumbela for Benguela, and Moçâmedes back to Luanda — so you are not spending days in a car.

Pungo Andongo's black boulders sit near Malanje and pair naturally with Kalandula over 2 nights. Benguela and Lobito share a coastline: the Restinga sandspit at Lobito is the beach half of that stop.

  • Luanda 2 nights → Malanje (Kalandula and Pungo Andongo) 2 nights
  • Fly or drive to Benguela and Lobito, 3 nights
  • Fly to Lubango, 3 nights on the escarpment
  • Drive the Leba pass to Moçâmedes, 3 nights
  • Fly Moçâmedes → Luanda, 1 night before departure

3 weeks: add Kongo heritage or the far south

With 21 days you can keep the 14-day loop and bolt on one of two extensions. Mbanza Kongo, the UNESCO-listed old capital of the Kongo kingdom, needs 1–2 nights and a flight or a very long drive north. Iona National Park, south of Namibe, needs 2–4 nights and an expedition-style vehicle with a local operator.

Pick one, not both. Each is a separate corridor and trying to combine them turns the trip into transit. If you want a slower version instead, add nights in Lubango and Namibe rather than new destinations.

Practical notes for any Angola itinerary

Fly where you can. Domestic flights connect Luanda with Lubango, Catumbela (for Benguela) and Moçâmedes, and they remove the worst of the driving. Schedules are limited, so book early and keep a buffer night in Luanda before an international departure.

Drive only in daylight and only with a local driver. Long-distance roads are not a place to learn local conditions, and night driving outside the cities is best avoided. Carry your yellow fever card for the whole trip — it is checked on arrival and can be asked for again.

Budget for Luanda being expensive. Hotels and restaurants in the capital cost more than most of Africa; the south and the interior are cheaper. Carry cash in kwanza for fuel stops, small hotels and park fees, and check current visa and entry rules before booking.

  • Book domestic flights early; frequencies are low
  • Keep one buffer night in Luanda before flying home
  • Carry the yellow fever card and a copy of your visa or entry stamp
  • Use a local driver for any long drive; avoid driving after dark

Questions people ask

What is a good 7-day itinerary for Angola?

Luanda for 3 nights, then fly to Lubango for 4 nights. From Lubango do day trips to Serra da Leba, Tundavala and the Cristo Rei, with the Namibe coast as an optional full-day run. Fly back to Luanda with a buffer night before your international flight.

How many weeks should I spend in Angola?

One week covers Luanda and the southern escarpment. Ten days adds Kalandula Falls and the Namibe coast. Two weeks covers the full western loop with flights. Three weeks lets you add Mbanza Kongo or Iona National Park — pick one.

What is the best route through Angola?

The western loop: Luanda, then Malanje for Kalandula and Pungo Andongo, then Benguela and Lobito, then Lubango for the escarpment, then Moçâmedes for the desert coast, flying back to Luanda. Flying the long legs is what makes it work.

Can I do Angola without domestic flights?

You can, but it costs days. Long drives need a local driver and daylight hours, so a no-flight trip usually means staying in Luanda and its area, or one southern base, rather than covering the country.

When should I go?

May to October is the dry season and the best window for most of the country. Kalandula Falls are strongest April to June. The Namibe coast works year-round.

Do I need a visa and a yellow fever card?

Most Western passports are visa-free for 30 days, but rules change — check before booking. A yellow fever vaccination card is checked on arrival, so carry the original.
