Go as a half-day trip by car, weekend morning: Central Asia's largest bazaar on the city edge, carpets to camels; this is a separate car trip from the central clusters, not a walk-on stop.

  • Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
  • Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
  • Turkmenistan ↗Almost all tourist visas need an invitation letter from a licensed Turkmen operator, issued before you apply; arrivals without one are refused boarding or entry.
  • Turkmenistan ↗Independent travel is not the expected model: itineraries are declared to the authorities, and travel outside Ashgabat needs permits your operator arranges.
  • Turkmenistan ↗Do not photograph government buildings, presidential palaces, military sites, police, airports or border areas; ask your guide before raising a camera.
  • Turkmenistan ↗Foreign cards and ATMs rarely work: bring enough clean, undamaged US dollar or euro notes for the whole trip and change only through official channels.
  • Ahal ↗Trips beyond the Ashgabat city limit need a permit that your operator files; do not leave the city without it.
  • Ashgabat ↗Monuments in Ashgabat are 1–5 km apart across open paved squares with no shade: move between clusters by car, walk only inside a cluster.
  • Ashgabat ↗Your hotel registers your stay with the authorities on the first night; keep your passport, visa and registration slip with you.

Tickets, prices and entry

Know before you go

  • Tolkuchka (now officially Altyn Asyr) sits on the ring road outside the centre: it is a car trip, not a walking add-on to a central cluster.
  • Sections run from carpets and textiles to household goods, livestock and a small animal market; the carpet section is the best reason to come.
  • Weekends (Thu evening through Sunday, especially Sunday morning) are when most stalls are open; a weekday visit can mean half the bazaar shuttered.
  • No fixed prices: bargaining is expected, especially for carpets. Bring cash — cards are not accepted by stallholders.
  • Toilets and shade are limited across the open grounds — plan water and a hat, and keep the visit to the cooler morning hours.
