Best places to visit in Bangladesh: top cities, regions and sights
For a first trip, base 3 nights in Dhaka, then add the Sundarbans by boat (2–3 nights) and either Srimangal or Sylhet (2 nights each). Go November–February, when roads and boats run on schedule. Skip the long south-east coast unless you have 10+ days and a booked guide.

Step by step: how to build the list
Start with Dhaka, because every route passes through it and the old city is the single thing most visitors remember. Give it three nights: one for Old Dhaka on foot and by rickshaw, one for the river at Sadarghat and Ahsan Manzil, one as buffer for traffic or a strike. Go early on a Friday morning when the roads are quietest.
Then choose one long excursion, not two. The Sundarbans is the strongest: a licensed boat trip of two or three nights from Khulna, usually paired with Bagerhat's Sixty Dome Mosque on the way back. The alternative is the north-east: train to Srimangal for tea gardens and Lawachara forest, then Sylhet for shrines, Ratargul swamp forest and Jaflong.
If you have ten days or more, add the ruins circuit from Bogura — Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur and Mahasthangarh — and Rajshahi for the Puthia temple complex. With two weeks, continue to Chattogram and Cox's Bazar. The Hill Tracts beyond Chattogram need a permit and a registered operator; treat them as a separate trip.
Move by domestic flight or train where you can and avoid night buses. Keep a buffer day: hartals, weather and road works all cost time.
- Book the Sundarbans through a licensed operator before you arrive in Khulna.
- Buy train tickets as early as the booking window allows; popular routes sell out.
- Carry cash for smaller towns; card acceptance is limited outside Dhaka and Chattogram.
- Hire a local guide in Old Dhaka — the lanes are hard to read alone.
Notes and cautions
Read your own government's travel advice before booking, and check the e-visa route. Cox's Bazar and the south-east have a heavy security presence and restrictions near the Myanmar border; follow local advice and do not travel to the border zone without checking.
Domestic tourism peaks in the winter holidays, so Cox's Bazar and the Sundarbans book out. Outside November–March expect heat, humidity and cyclone-season disruption on the coast.
- Check current advisories for the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Cox's Bazar border area.
- Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth having here.
- Confirm boat and flight schedules the day before you travel.

What are the best places to visit in Bangladesh?
Dhaka for Old Dhaka and the river, the Sundarbans for mangroves by boat, Srimangal and Sylhet for tea hills and forest, Bagerhat and Paharpur for monuments, and Cox's Bazar for the coast. Most first trips combine Dhaka with one of the others.
How many days do you need in Bangladesh?

Which areas of Bangladesh suit a first visit?
Dhaka, the Sundarbans and either Srimangal or Sylhet. They are the easiest to reach, have the most established operators and work in the dry season. Save the Hill Tracts and the far south-east for a later trip.
When is the best time to visit?
November to February is dry and cool and the best window for the whole country. The Sundarbans and the coast stay workable into March. Avoid the monsoon and cyclone season on the coast.
Is Bangladesh safe for tourists?
Most visits pass without incident, but check your government's advice, avoid political gatherings, and take local guidance on the south-east. See our safety page for detail.
Do I need a visa?
Most visitors need a visa, usually applied for online before travel. Rules differ by passport; check the visa page and the official portal before booking flights.
