Treat Bayonne as a half-day or a cruise-day base, not a sightseeing trip: 1 night if you sail from Cape Liberty, otherwise 4–5 h from Jersey City.

Bayonne is a working-class Hudson County city on a peninsula between Newark Bay and the Kill Van Kull, 30–40 min from Manhattan by light rail and PATH. Its draw is narrow and specific: the Tear Drop Memorial and Cape Liberty Cruise Port at the old military ocean terminal, a large county park, and a low-rise residential grid that feels nothing like Manhattan. Most travellers see it in an afternoon or use it as a cheaper bed for New York, not as a destination in itself.

About Bayonne, New Jersey

Bayonne is a New Jersey city of 72,000 people (2020), sitting just south of the more built-up Jersey City and linked to Staten Island's North Shore by the Bayonne Bridge. It is largely working-class, with a mix of private houses and small apartment buildings, and it holds Cape Liberty Cruise Port. The layout is low-density and often tree-lined, a suburban feel that recalls the era before gentrification, and there are many churches. Daytrippers from New York City do not usually treat it as a tourist stop.

The city occupies a peninsula between Newark Bay and the Kill Van Kull. Visitors tend to come for the two shopping centers along Highway 440 or to walk the only county-owned park, which is also the largest in the city. Car access is limited to three routes, and rush hour can bring jams at the New Jersey Turnpike exit.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail runs the length of Bayonne with four stops (8th St, 22nd St, 34th St, 45th St) and continues north through Jersey City to Hoboken Terminal, where you transfer to PATH for Manhattan. NJ Transit and private buses run on Broadway, Kennedy Blvd and Avenue C. The city is spread out and the memorial and cruise port have no pedestrian or bus access, so plan on a taxi or rideshare for those.

Watch out

Safety

Bayonne is a low-rise residential city and street crime is not the main worry; the real risks are traffic on Route 440 and the Turnpike, unlit waterfront paths after dark, and the fact that the memorial and cruise port are unreachable on foot.
  • The Tear Drop Memorial and Cape Liberty have no pedestrian or bus access: from the 34th St light rail stop it is roughly a 3-mile taxi or rideshare ride.
  • Only three road ways in and out (Bayonne Bridge, Route 440, New Jersey Turnpike); rush hour backs up badly on the Turnpike exit.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are not final.
  • Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink, 15–20% taxis.
