What Chaoyang is like
Chaoyang covers the urban area north and east of central Beijing, starting at the Second Ring Road and stretching beyond the Fifth. It holds the Central Business District around Guomao, the embassy belt and Sanlitun, the 798 Art Zone, Liangmaqiao, Wangjing and the Olympic Park in the northwest of the district.
It is not a sightseeing district in the imperial sense. Most visitors end up here for food, bars, galleries, malls and the Olympic site, or because a hotel near an office or the airport road makes sense. The scale is the thing to plan around: two addresses in Chaoyang can be 8 km apart, and a 5–15 minute walk from the metro is normal even with the dense line coverage.
The main precincts you are likely to use: Guomao and the CBD for towers, malls and business hotels; Sanlitun for restaurants, bars and shopping; 798 for contemporary art; Liangmaqiao for the riverfront and Solana; Olympic Park for the Bird's Nest and open space.
Should you stay in Chaoyang?
Yes for nightlife, food and shopping trips, for business travel, and for anyone who values a wide choice of international restaurants over walking distance to monuments. Sanlitun and the CBD are the two practical bases; Liangmaqiao is quieter and sits on the river, with Solana mall and Chaoyang Park nearby.
No if the Forbidden City, Tiananmen, the hutongs and the Temple of Heaven are your priority. Those sit in Dongcheng and Xicheng, and staying there removes a daily metro ride across the centre. A split stay also works: two or three nights central, then Chaoyang for the last nights before a flight.
Budget matters too. CBD and Sanlitun hotels and serviced apartments are often priced above comparable rooms in Dongcheng (2026 estimate, check current rates), though mid-range options exist around Wangjing and further east along Lines 14 and 15.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Restaurant, bar and café choice across the city's widest range | Far from the Forbidden City, Tiananmen and the main hutongs |
| Sanlitun Taikoo Li and SOHO for shopping and people-watching | Large district; a 'nearby' address can still mean a taxi |
| CBD towers, malls and business hotels around Guomao | Higher room rates in the CBD and Sanlitun core (2026 estimate, check) |
| 798 Art Zone and Olympic Park inside the district | Evening traffic on the Third Ring Road and Gongti North Road |
| Good metro coverage and the Capital Airport Express | 5–15 minute walk from most stations to the door |
Getting to and around Chaoyang
Chaoyang is served by subway Lines 1, 3, 6, 10, 12, 14, 15 and 17, plus the Capital Airport Express. Line 10 is the workhorse, linking the CBD, embassy area and residential districts; Line 3 reaches the heart of Sanlitun; Line 1 serves the CBD; Lines 14 and 15 cover eastern and northeastern Chaoyang including 798 and Wangjing.
From central Beijing, allow a metro ride of roughly 20–40 minutes to Sanlitun or Guomao depending on your start and changes (check your route). From the airport, the Capital Airport Express connects to Sanyuanqiao and Dongzhimen, where you change to the metro; check current fares and first and last train times before a late arrival.
Shared bicycles are widely available and often the fastest way between Sanlitun, Liangmaqiao and Chaoyang Park. Taxis and ride-hailing work well but slow down badly at rush hour on the ring roads. Pay for metro and most shops with Alipay or WeChat Pay set up before you fly.
