Give Biloxi 2 nights: one for the beach and Beauvoir, one for a casino or Ship Island. Skip it as a base if you want walkable streets — you need a car.

Biloxi is a small Gulf Coast city of about 45,000 people strung along US-90, with a 40 km seawall, nine casinos and a seafood history. Sights sit 3–8 km apart, so a car or the casino hopper bus decides your day. Most travellers use it as a 2-night stop between New Orleans and Mobile.

About Biloxi

Biloxi is a city in Harrison County on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, known for its beaches and nine casinos. It sits between New Orleans and Mobile, reached mainly by Interstate 10, with US-90 running along the beach. The name Biloxi means "First People" and came from a Native American tribe met by French explorer Pierre LeMoyne d'Iberville. Eight flags have flown over the city, among them French, Spanish, Confederate and United States. Around 16 million people visit the casinos each year, and the city also holds the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and Museum, a museum of the Confederacy.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-10 runs north of town, US-90 along the beach, I-110 links them. Coast Transit Authority buses cover Biloxi, Gulfport, Long Beach and D'Iberville but run infrequently. The CTA Casino Hopper loops the casinos; casino shuttles are often free for guests.

Beach Blvd (US-90) strip

Casino resorts and beachfront motels between the lighthouse and Beauvoir; walkable to the sand, not to downtown.

Downtown / Vieux Marche

Restaurants, bars and the Ohr-O'Keefe museum; quieter at night, 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) from the big casinos.

Biloxi Bay / Back Bay

Cheaper rooms near I-110 and the marinas; you will drive everywhere.

Watch out

Safety

Biloxi is a normal small US city: the beach strip is calm, but lock your car and stay in lit areas downtown at night. The bigger risks are summer heat, rip currents and hurricane season.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check forecasts and know your evacuation route before you book late summer.
  • Casino floors allow smoking in many properties; non-smoking rooms are not guaranteed unless you ask.
  • The beach is shallow and calm but not patrolled everywhere — swim near other people.
  • Summer heat and humidity are severe; plan indoor stops midday.
