Stop for one night on the Newell Highway, or skip: Boggabilla has a pub, a motel and a gallery, and nothing that needs two days.

Boggabilla is a 990-person village on the Newell Highway at the Queensland border, 10 km from Goondiwindi and 115 km from Moree. It is a fuel-and-bed stop on the long inland drive, not a destination. One night, or a leg-stretch, is the right call; the nearest real services, car rental and supermarkets are in Goondiwindi.

About Boggabilla

Boggabilla is a small village of 990 people (2016) in the New England region of New South Wales. It lies at the meeting point of the Newell and Bruxner highways, 10 km south-east of Goondiwindi in Queensland, 115 km north-east of Moree and 62 km north-west of Yetman. The surrounding soil is fertile and used for cotton, broadacre crops, sheep and beef cattle, and a number of residents travel to Goondiwindi for work. The village sits within the Moree Plains Shire Local Government Area.

The name comes from the Kamilaroi indigenous language and is said to mean 'full of creeks'. For travellers on the inland route, Boggabilla works as a brief stop rather than a base; shopping and car rental are found in Goondiwindi, and there is no taxi or local bus service in the village.

Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet highway village; the real risks are the road (random drug and alcohol testing, 110 km/h (68 mph) limit), summer heat and the lack of banks, taxis and rental cars. Violent crime is not the concern here.
  • Newell Highway is a drug and alcohol testing corridor: Boggabilla highway patrol runs random tests and vehicle searches. Do not exceed 110 km/h (68 mph).
  • No banks and no ATM except the 24 h Coles Express fuel stop; bring cash or a card that works at the pump.
  • Queensland does not use daylight saving: from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, NSW times are one hour ahead of Goondiwindi times. Check coach and flight times against the right zone.
  • Fuel up before long stretches: the next 24 h fuel south is at the Coles Express, and Boomi has no petrol station at all.
  • Summer inland heat is the real hazard; carry water on any walk.
